About this listen

After years of paying her dues on the force, Beth Sturgis has earned her place as a detective for the Robbery-Homicide division of the Atlanta PD. Now, she's heading up a major manhunt for a potential serial killer who's working his way inward from the outskirts of the city. The copycat elements in the first crime scene lead Sturgis to retired FBI agent Jack Kale, who was responsible for apprehending and nearly killing the murderer known as the Scarecrow, the same Scarecrow who appears to be this new killer's terrible inspiration.

A reclusive single father and university professor, Kale is trying to keep the demons at bay through therapy and avoidance. That is, until Sturgis shows up asking for his help. Against his better judgment, Kale is drawn into the most dangerous cat and mouse game of his life.

Robert Daniels's Once Shadows Fall, is a gripping thriller in the best-selling tradition of Silence of the Lambs and is sure to become a crime fiction classic.

Worth a read

This is the story of a newly appointed female homicide detective hunting a serial killer. The story was really good, and I liked that the killer wasn't known until the ending. I felt it was original and not cookie-cutter.

The only things in the story I felt were not good were:
1. the FBI consultant seemed to be able to read the clues way too fast. At one point I thought he may even be the killer.
2. The detective seemed way too eager to be in a relationship. All I could think was "they've known each other two weeks." That wasn't realistic to me at all.

As for the narration, I felt it was not good. If you're going to read police procedurals or FBI books, please learn the lingo. The narrator spelled out U-N-S-U-B instead of saying "unsub." I also felt the narrator was WAY too overdramatic on most parts. Her voice is pleasant enough, but overall I thought she wasn't a good fit for the book.

I wouldn't mind reading the second book in this series, but I can't take the narrator doing another one.

amazing

I listen to a book everyday and this was the best one I've listened to in months. I thought it was well written and a great story. I think this book is an instant classic if you enjoy serial killer mysteries you will definitely enjoy this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come to audible.

Okay book - a little far fetched for me

Would you try another book from Robert Daniels and/or Dina Pearlman?

I might try another book from Robert Daniels but I find Dina Pearlman hard to listen to. Her narration did not fit the book. It was hard to listen to and follow the story. It was a little far fetched but overall not a bad story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Marcia Clark - The Competition

Would you be willing to try another one of Dina Pearlman’s performances?

No

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Maybe

Poor narration

This is my first book by ‘this author. I enjoyed the book and will definitely look for another. The narrator sounded like a school teacher standing reading to her class. All the way through the book was wishing it had a better narrator.

Blah

The story on this was very factually flawed and the author (or narrator?) seemed unfamiliar with terminology. One example was insistence for spelling U-N-S-U-B each time. The characters were very flat and one dimensional. The plot felt unsupported by research. I don't recommend this book.

Narrators can ruin what might be a good book

Would you try another book from Robert Daniels and/or Dina Pearlman?

Robert Daniels YES Dina Pearlman ABSOLUTELY NOT

Has Once Shadows Fall turned you off from other books in this genre?

No just Narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Dina Pearlman’s performances?

NO WAY

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Once Shadows Fall?

I couldn't even make it through a chapter let alone the whole book so couldn't say

Any additional comments?

I HATE when I find what I think may be a great book just to have it RUINED by such bad Narrators. Listening to Dina Pearlman is like listening to my 2nd grade teacher read Dick and Jane.
