About this listen

Traveling to Oregon by covered wagon in 1844 is an exciting adventure for 13-year-old John Sager and his family. The Oregon Trail leads over mountains of broken rock, across churning rivers, and through hostile Indian territory. Each day brings new scenery and challenges. But after months of grueling travel, his father dies - then 11 days later John buries his mother. Suddenly the six young Sagers are alone - and John is the head of the family! Should he let the other pioneer families take his brothers and sisters, or should he keep the family together and head in the direction his parents originally intended - to Oregon? Honor Morrow’s thrilling tale and Norman Dietz’ dramatic narration bring all of the hardships and thrills of the early western settlers vividly to life.

Fantastic lessons in here for a boy growing into a man. Definitely worth the listen, end night though disturbing in places.

Incredible story of determination and endurance of the children alone in the Oregon trail. HIGHLY recommend this book! My kids range from 6-13 and they loved listening to this book. My 6yr old kept begging to listen. Thanks for making this book available in audio!

Incredible story

My kids loved this audiobook, asking to listen to it over their music. The Narrator's voice was just amazing. The story, though a fictionalized account of the Sager children, including a Kit Carson intersection, was enthralling. I usually do not censor the older books with their word choice about people groups. I choose instead to talk with my kids about the prejudice of author and people group as it comes up. This book refers to biracial people of English/Spanish or Spanish/ Indigenous people as HALF BREEDS.

Great story, horrible choice of words.

A FANTASTIC story for any age! My 10 yo son has been absolutely captivated from the very first sentence.
HIGHLY recommend. Excellent reading performance.

This is the story of a boy struggling to find his place as he leaves boyhood behind. Is he as ready for life's cruel realities as he thinks he is? Was his parents correct in their reprove? He learns the value of family & hard work in the most difficult of circumstances.

An excellent story that teaches character, courage, & high moral standing
