The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life.

Story
Who were the old conjurors and witches of Appalachia? What were their practices and beliefs? How can you learn the ways of conjuring for yourself? Appalachian folk magic and conjuring are little known today, but 40 or 50 years ago just about every person you might ask in Appalachia either knew something about it themselves or knew someone who did it. These practices and “superstitions” are at the core of Appalachian culture. In Doctoring the Devil, Jake Richards speaks to those questions and more.

Story
It's easy to go through days, weeks, even years on autopilot, moving from one activity to another, rarely taking the time to consider what it's all for anyway. Why did God make us? What does he want us to do with the time he has given us? In her best-selling story-driven style, Christian rocker Lacey Sturm shares with listeners the beautiful struggle of learning what one's unique gifts are and pursuing them wholeheartedly. She helps them see each day as a gift from God, find balance in their busy lives, and discover the joy of giving God's gifts back to him by using them to bring him glory.

Story
They believed they would live forever. So begins Mira Ptacin's haunting account of the women of Camp Etna - an otherworldly community in the woods of Maine that has, since 1876, played host to generations of Spiritualists and mediums dedicated to preserving the links between the mortal realm and the afterlife. Beginning her narrative in 1848 with two sisters who claimed they could speak to the dead, Ptacin reveals how Spiritualism first blossomed into a national practice during the Civil War, yet continues - even thrives - to this very day.

In Backwoods Witchcraft, Jake Richards offers up a folksy stew of family stories, lore, omens, rituals, and conjure crafts that he learned from his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and his grandfather, a Baptist minister who Jake remembers could "rid someone of a fever with an egg or stop up the blood in a wound." The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life.

A Brilliant Piece of Work
I was blown away by Mamma Starr's book. It's breathtakingly moving. Not only does she give you a solid understanding of the history of Conjure in the U.S., as well as provide her readers/listeners with dozens upon dozens of step by step rootwork, but she delivers all of the information with such heartfelt grace. There were many times that I went back and listened to sections of the book over again because the underlying message offered good life lessons. There were times that I was brought to tears. The book made me feel empowered from the inside out. God bless you Mamma Starr, and thank you.

Paradigm Shift
Fascinating. It touched on a lot of the things I vaguely recall my grandmother and older aunts saying (not teaching) and doing. I see no disparity between this practice and any other folk practices in other cultures that have been absorbed by Christianity and left their mark on it. I do find it fascinating that folks consider this fact "pushing" Christianity on people. You don't say that about how magic systems in other traditions work so why is this different? It is what it is. If you don't want to be a Christian, don't be one. That's not what this book is about. I plan to do more reading on this subject.
