About this listen

Jack Hulbert has worked at the hardware store Nuts and Bolts since he was sixteen. He had big dreams of leaving town and traveling, but five years later, not much has changed, and he worries he'll end up living the rest of his life in the small town he was born in.

Hudson Carter has been working in Sacramento for the past ten years, managing a big box store. He left Foggy Basin for college in the city and he never once looked back. His parents have owned the hardware store in town for two generations, and he'd hoped to avoid the same fate, but when his father tells him his plans to either sell the store or close it, he has a change of heart.

Hudson has been single for years, and a few bad breakups have left him jaded about finding the perfect partner. But he's not prepared for the cute, and much younger man who knows far more than he does about running the hardware store and isn't afraid to tell him. It's time for this city boy to embrace his country roots and find out what really matters in his life, and a certain country boy is more than willing to help.

Hudson and Jack

Hudson left Foggy Basin to go to college and stayed in the city for a career. When his dad tells him he is thinking of selling the family hardware story he takes some time off and heads to his hometown. He meets Jack, who works for his dad, the younger man is snarky but is worried about his job when he finds the owner might sell.

The more the time the pair spend together the more attraction blooms. I enjoyed the story but was not really a fan of the narrator.

Hudson & Jack

This was another good story in this multi-author series. There was a short part of the story that didn't work well for me but it wasn't enough to take too much away from the rest of the story. I enjoyed Hudson and Jack's story and their happily ever after. I loved the audiobook for this. Guy Veryzer's narration was perfect for this story.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Sweet small town

The audio version of BL Maxwell's Nuts and Bolts does credit to the story. Guy Veryzer's narration gives a nice, laid back tone to a sweet story about a city boy coming back to his country roots. Hudson Carter left Foggy Basin twenty years ago to go to college and then work in Sacramento. He doesn't love his job and the news that his dad, Jonas, is going to sell the family hardware store gives him the chance to reassess his life. Jack Hulbert has never traveled far from Foggy Basin. Why should he? His family and friends are all there, and he loves his job at Nuts and Bolts, the Carter family hardware store. He manages the store as Jonas slowly steps away from it.
This is a grumpy/grumpy, city vs. country, small town trope story with an age gap between the main characters. Jack and Hudson clash, but are attracted, become friends, than lovers in a few short weeks. Their date at the lake was very romantic, and the sizzle will make your ears tingle.
I loved the book, but like all BL Maxwell stories, found it too short, too quickly read. This audio adds an extra sweetness. Very relaxing.
I received an advanced copy of the audio code and this is my review.

Not For Me

I really enjoy BL Maxwell's stories, but this was a miss for me. I liked the premise of the son who left to fulfill the life he wanted but coming back when his parents are going to give up the store. I thought the dynamic between him and the longtime employee would be fun or have some tension. But I just wasn't feeling the chemistry. Jack made bad impression on me early on and I just didn't like his attitude. Hudson was okay but didn't stand out to me either way.

I also didn't like this narrator's work. I couldn't tell their voices apart very well and didn't really like the inflections in his voice as he narrated.

This one just wasn't for me.
