Publisher's summary

Following the success of If You Only Knew and On Second Thought comes the highly anticipated new novel by New York Times best-selling author Higgins - a funny and bittersweet story of a woman who returns to her hometown after a decade's absence hoping to resuscitate her relationship with her family, only to discover that her homecoming is not as welcome as she had imagined.

It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid and where some revelations about her family could either heal her or send her scrambling back to Boston on the next ferry.

Critic reviews

"The first-person point of view, coupled with a skilled narration by Xe Sands, immediately draws the listener into Nora Stuart's story.... Sands smartly voices the Maine accent of Nora's mother and other islanders. Sands has the listener laughing as she brings the comedic elements alive and pulls their heartstrings at the sad moments, both of which give the story rich dimension." (AudioFile)

I’ve yet to find a KH book I didn’t like.

Like her other books, I couldn’t put it down. Though a little heavier subject matter than usual, I was engrossed. Her main character is smart, kind, insecure at times, and very much like most of us. It was nice to see her get some kahunas by the end of the book. I also liked the love interest very much because he was also flawed.

A wonderful story

Once again Kristin Higgins has written a beautiful story with characters you can see and relate too, while feeling their pain and joy.

Loved this book!!!

This has been my favorite Kristan Higgins book so far!!! Too often with other authors, it takes me a while to really connect with a story, so I push through knowing that at some point the story takes off and I’m locked in ‘til the end. That has NEVER been the case with a Kristin Higgins story. She always draws me in from the beginning and she has me until the end.

I loved that this book had some dramatic twists and ups and downs, all with some laughter and a few tears sprinkled in. The characters came to life for me, and I could relate every one of them to someone I have known. The ending was skillfully knitted to a close, and finishing the book left me happy with just a hint of sadness. Bittersweet perhaps. Definitely worth listening to again!

Xe Sands is my FAVORITE FAVORITE narrator, and when paired with a Kristan Higgins book, it is perfect chemistry together! I’ve selected books primarily because Xe Sands narrated them, and although I enjoyed them, she shines best with Kristan Higgins.

I could not stop listening

There are some places where the twists are predictable, but this was ok. The characters were so interesting, and there were surprises. I was grateful to find this book. It is just down to earth GOOD
