About this listen

After years away on the pro rodeo circuit, Johnny Jordan struts into Santa Fe to ask his boyhood friend, Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney, to serve as a technical advisor on a contemporary Western movie to be filmed along the Mexican border.

Kerney agrees and plans a working vacation on location in a remote area of the state known as the Bootheel with his wife, Lt. Colonel Sara Brannon, and their three-year-old son, Patrick. But a dead man on a road near an isolated border crossing, a federal undercover investigation into immigrant smuggling, the search for a fugitive from military justice hiding somewhere in Europe, and Johnny Jordan's troublesome behavior ensure that nothing goes as planned. As separate investigations embroil Kerney and Sara in circumstances that will forever changes their lives, Kerney must care for Patrick while Sara plays a dangerous game of Pentagon politics.

Packed with family secrets, international intrigue, and memorable characters, this is McGarrity's most ambitious and involving novel to date. It travels an accelerating arc from Santa Fe and the desert grasslands and mountains of the Bootheel to the most secret levels of the Pentagon and a resort town on the coast of Ireland, then back to an adrenaline-charged climax on a desolate landing strip a few miles north of the Mexican border.

Two in one

Although this felt a bit like the season in a long running TV show in which the plot involves a foreign location so that the cast and crew can go on vacation, I still loved it.

The never ending story

It just stopped dead. No resolution of Sarah's problems, no word about Jordan, and nothing about anything else. Also, if an author writes a series of books, how about giving them a number, so we can read em in order. Was a good story up to the end, but it stopped so abruptly I went back to see id I had missed downloading a part.

Left me hanging

There were 2 simultaneous mysteries and the one I found most interesting wasn't resolved.

Best narration!

So Glad to have George Guidal back in the saddle! His narration makes the story!

Nothing but trouble

Disappointed with ending. No real climax, just "The End" where it seemed more could have been tied together.

Not McGarrity's best effort. Book just "ends".

If it wasn't for George Guidall's narration, this book would be rated a 1 star. The author can's seem to make up his mind about what the main story line is. He has several substories going, but never really finishes any of them. His main character "Johnny" story line is not finished at all. As if he forgot about that character. About have the story takes place in Ireland of all places. That story and the fate of that subplot also seems to just be forgotten and ends without resolution to the fate of Kevin's wife who is just sent off to the middle east; end of her story.
Seems like the author is out of ideas, or just tired of writing. George Guidall, the narrator, is the only saving grace for this book.
I have listened to most of McGarrity's books. HIGHLY recommend the first three, "Hard Country", "Back Country" and "Last Ranch". Then move on to other books read by Guidall.

Great series

The narrator sure brings this contemporary western to life! Wish the series went on for 20 more.

Too desultory

I recognize that every mystery writer needs a fair amount of “filler“ to surround his or her Basic theme. In this case, there is too much travel log material, too many descriptions of decoration, jewelry, interiors, history of New Mexico and Ireland, etc. While the family material is reasonably well done, there is more than is needed. The two criminal themes, One left over from a previous book, are not that interesting. I sense a kind of “perils of Pauline“ approach to McGarrity’s novels. The ending already suggests that Pauline will be in trouble in his next attempt. Regretfully, I will not be learning how she escapes. George Guidall, as always is excellent.
