About this listen

Cassandra Khaw's Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists.

A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company.

It’s the perfect venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends, brought back together to celebrate a wedding.

A night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare as secrets get dragged out and relationships are tested.

But the house has secrets too. Lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart.

And she gets lonely down there in the dirt.

Effortlessly taking the classic haunted house story and turning it on its head, Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a sharp and devastating exploration of grief, the parasitic nature of relationships, and the consequences of our actions.

Random and wordy

It had a ton of hearty words but the plot lacked substance and detail. It was quick and lacked emotion. The story itself was terrible. It had a possibility of having a good story but was rushed. There was no back story and the “haunting” itself disjointed

Short but Interesting

I wasn't sure what to expect from this novella, but I was pleasantly delighted by the story. The overall theme of being haunted is very well done.

Easily finished within an afternoon of housekeeping.

An artistic, introspective tragedy in horror dress

Self-aware/meta. More sad than frightening (this is not a critique, just a statement). Introspective. I hope that you like similes and metaphors; I found some truly wonderful ones in here; every sentence seems to contain at least one (I liked them, but others may not). I learned a fair but about Japanese culture. Diversity in the cast. There were some genuinely funny moments as well.

Probably not worth a full Audible credit though.

Not worth the time

Pronunciation was off, and the voice made it hard to listen to. The storyline had good potential but was rushed and the ending didn't give satisfaction.

Eh

Ok. A bit too descriptive. Adjectives for days. Not my favorite. The narration was ok, but the attempt at deeper voices for the men was cringe.

Too short

Too short! The story had enough meat to expand into a really good read. It left too many unanswered questions. I would have liked to get more insight into each character; it felt like we only saw a surface glimpse into who they were.

it was okay

i can't say this is the best book ever, but it was interesting enough. as some have said, the writing can be a bit excessive to the point you're unsure what you're still reading about, but I can also appreciate the picture that it was attempting to paint.
not a bad book, but not the best

Meh

Awkward phrasing and awkward delivery. Felt like someone reading a bad short story they found on the ground out loud.

Uninspiring

It felt like a thousand other haunted house stories I’ve heard over the years. I’m glad it was short.

Too wordy but good premise

I didn't hate as some do but the excessive use of adjectives, metaphors, verbs, etc is annoying. It comes across as if the author is trying to impress us with her extensive vocabulary. It feels like she is talking down to the reader.

The basic premise is a good one. The manor is as disturbing as the ghost herself. It's clogged up with too much discription and too much conflict between the extremely flawed characters.

It would have helped to have one likeable & relatable character.

The end felt rushed & the epilogue too predictable.

I'd like to see a good, horror, director make this into a film.
