About this listen

Hailed by the best-selling writer William Kent Krueger as "the year's best thriller debut", this roller-coaster listen features a Jack Reacher-like drifter protagonist with lethal skills whose mission to rescue his abducted sister pits him against a meth kingpin seeking to control all the trade in the Western United States.

Sixteen years. That's how long Clyde Barr has been away from Colorado's thick forests, alpine deserts, and craggy peaks, running from a past filled with haunting memories. But now he's back, having roamed across three continents as a hunter, an adventurer, a soldier of fortune, and, most recently, an unjustly imprisoned convict. And once again his past is reaching out to claim him.

By the light of a flickering campfire, Clyde receives a frantic phone call for help from Jen, the youngest of his three older sisters. Then the line goes dead. Clyde doesn't know how much time he has. He doesn't know where Jen is located. He doesn't even know who has her. All he knows is that nothing short of dying will stop him from saving her.

Tagging along with Clyde on this strange, desperate, against-all-odds rescue mission is a young woman named Allie, whose motivations for hurtling into harm's way are fascinatingly complex. As the duo races against the clock, it is Allie who gets Clyde to see what he has become and what he can be.

Great action with plenty of character

What made the experience of listening to Nothing Short of Dying the most enjoyable?

The detail to build characters and the descriptions of the surroundings, the environments was a character in itself. The narration was spot on, this is one of my favorite audio books this year.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters and the description of their environment. The mountains, trees, cabins I felt like I was there along for the dangerous ride.

Which character – as performed by Jeremy Bobb – was your favorite?

Jeremy Bobb was just flat out great I'm a fan now.

Dying for next book

A great book for what looks to be an incredible series with a great lead character. I hope the second installment is on the way.

This book is painfully stupid

It had the promise of a good book - But the scenarios kept getting dumber and dumber. Stupid to the point that I am angry at anyone giving this book a good review.

I've already wasted too much time on this - I guess this review is for people that expect more

Not MY Jack Reacher!!!!!

Any additional comments?

What a HUGE disappointment. I bought this because of my great love of the Jack Reacher stories. But imagine this... Jack Reacher is involved with a lot of drug people, smokes, and is sort of a creep (although maybe he gets better). That's Clyde Barr. I could not keep listening. Beware. If you don't like reading about junkies, this may not be the book for you. The world may be full of that crap, but I'm not going to spend my time reading about it. This is the third book in a row I want to return, but don't feel it's fair. I was on such a good role too.
