About this listen

Mark O'Brien is finally being honest with himself. His relationship with Rachel is over, and he's moving out of the home they've shared for six years. They get along, but he can't fix a relationship when the person he's with is the wrong gender.

Jamie Robertson, one of the removal men, is huge and ridiculously gorgeous, and Mark is smitten at first sight. When a cardboard box splits, revealing items of a personal nature that Mark never wanted anybody to see, he's mortified. But it sparks the start of a beautiful friendship with benefits.

As Jamie initiates Mark into the joys of gay sex, the two men get increasingly close, and "nothing serious" turns into something rather important to both of them. But communication isn't their strong point. Will either man ever find the courage to be honest about his feelings?

Odd narrator selection but I enjoyed it overall

**3.5 stars**

I'm SO conflicted on this story! Everything from the audio narration to the plot is just pulling me in two different directions! I settled on 3.5 stars, but there were parts that I loved and parts that I didn't care for.

I'll start with the narration, which tends to make or break audiobooks for me. I should have disliked this narrator (Michael Pauley). First of all, he is an American dude reading for characters who are clearly British, which is WEIRD! I was really puzzled by the narrator choice because the delivery of certain lines just sounded off with an American accent. Also, he has one voice, ONE, and he uses it for everyone, male or female. Finally, during the sex scenes, as the action picks up, so does the speed of his voice. Picture a sportscaster or an auctioneer getting more and more excited as things start getting heated. It was... odd. But, crazily enough, I enjoyed Michael Pauley! I think it is just that his voice is so sexy sounding... or maybe it was his acting skills. Either way, I was NOT displeased by the narration, though it was not my usual flavor.

In terms of the book, I was expecting to LOVE it. Gay first-timers are my thang, and so I was expecting to drool all over this one. And while the sex scenes were REALLY hot, and I liked the chemistry between the two men, nothing really happens during the story. I mean, NOTHING. It is light and low drama, but the whole plot centers around communication issues. It is easy, enjoyable reading, but not I-want-to-die-this-is-so-good amazing.

Overall, I'd recommend this for people looking for a short, sexy listen that features lot of sexual exploration and not a whole lot of plot.

Really wish they'd gone with a Brit to narrate

Mark falls in lust with Jamie right from the start. He is one of the movers that help Mark into his new apartment and his new life. When a box of embarrassing personal items falls open, Jamie helps him investigate his new sexuality.
It was meant to be a casual thing. Mark's first explorations at gay sex. Jamie's continuation of a love 'em and leave 'em life style.
But… as time passes, both guys begin to see that this relationship can never just be a casual f*ckbuddy thing. The funny thing is that both worry that the other will be disappointed if things turn serious and both worry that the "l word" could end things.
**
I loved this book! It was fun, fast paced and really sweet, too. Mark’s exploration into sex was both hot and at turns emotional and moving. Jamie has his own demons to fight which prevent him from committing to a long term relationship, and it was great watching him move through these issues and evolve and grow as a man.
Jay Northcote really knows how to give us “every day joe" characters whose love stories are anything but ordinary.

I highly recommend this book and give it a 5 of stars – I loved it!

Audio

Michael Pauley is an American (or Canadian or whatever). He’s not British. This is a VERY British story with British slang and a British setting. I’m not sure why in the world a Brit wasn’t given this to narrate… I was terribly disappointed in that aspect. The slang just sounds funny coming from the flat American voice.

However, to be fair, Michael does a nice job with the narration. Nothing too spectacular in terms of voice differentiation, but he’s unobtrusive and allows you to become immersed in the story.

I was very pleased to see that the next Jay Northcote book was done with an accent and I wish this had been as well, but it wasn’t a bad narration, just not great.

B rating...

My Review:
Overall: 3.5
Performance: 4.0
Story: 3.25

This is a short book and as such, I had a hard time really feeling the emotional connection between the two guys. There's no doubt they connect sexually...a lot, which is to be expected since this is a whole new world for Mark. Also, they set out to have just a sexual relationship, so it does take a while for it to truly develop into something else...something that's kind of hard to pull off with the abbreviated word count.

But what there is to the story, I enjoyed. I just wanted it to be a bit 'more', but that's a common complaint from me with short stories. And let's face it, I love the romance...so the deeper it goes, the happier I am.

The setup for these two guys worked for me. I liked how they met and how things played out with Mark's ex...I really loved her and how supportive she was of him, even though he pretty much broke her heart.

If you don't have a lot of time to commit to an audiobook, this is a pretty good choice. It was light and entertaining. I had just one niggle with the narration though...the book takes place in England and one of the guys is Scottish. The narrator didn't have the accents which really would have enhanced the story.

But like I said, overall, this was enjoyable.

Why?

Any additional comments?

Why in the world is an American accent used when clearly the main characters and the story is in the freakin' UK??? And the characters aren't even American, they are Irish/British. Oh, and the best part...the use of English (British) terms coming out of an American accent. (Being sarcastic here).

No, just no! They should have just waited for Dave Gillies to do this audiobook.

Bad decision on who ever thought this was a good idea! Ugh!

Michael Pauley, you get 4 stars because your narration was wonderful but just didn't work for me with this particular story.

Odd Choice of Narrator

What did you love best about Nothing Serious?

It's a good story with believable characters.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His narration was fine, but this is a story based in England with British slang. Sounds odd when spoken by an American.

Any additional comments?

Just stick to the print/Kindle version of this one.

Sweet and light

Love this story for its sweetness and lack of angst. It was probably more real than a lot of stories because of how naturally the two MCs fell into a relationship. Given than this was a UK based story, a different narrators have been more appropriate. But, then again, Michael Pauley is fantastic and I love his voice. It was only some of the slang/terms that I got reminded where the story was located and got a little chuckle from his American accent. Still very worth the listen and will be a repeat audiobook for me. :)
