Publisher's summary
I am not a doctor. I am a diabetic. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes thirty years ago at the age of 11.
I followed all the rules, becoming a spokesperson in my community for a diet rich in “healthy” whole grains as countless doctors and dietitians had recommended. However, during all of this time, I was overweight, had bad skin, and suffered from PCOS. At the height of my consumption of whole grains and despite my exercise regimen, I was 40 pounds overweight, had chronic yeast infections and low energy. I was tired and unhappy.
A random comment from a stranger caused me to start questioning the rules and doing my own research. I learned more about how my body works and made changes to my diet and lifestyle. I felt better within weeks and my health continued to improve for years to come.
I forged ahead down this path of in-depth research, experimenting on myself more and more. I lost weight, gained energy, and started seeing the best blood sugar levels I’d ever seen. But most importantly, I FELT GREAT. I was so disappointed that no doctor had ever told me these things. I know that most of us with diabetes feel frustrated. They feel shame that despite an honest effort to follow the “rules,” diabetes continues to win.
In this book, I share how to easily optimize your health by naturally enhancing the blood sugar stabilizing powers of the body, and facts I have discovered about the potential factors that may be getting in your way. I share changes I’ve made to achieve more control over my diabetes and feel better, and I encourage you to dig deeper into your own body’s needs to figure out what works for you.
I promise it will be easier than you expect and absolutely worth it. I believe you can achieve better blood sugar levels, have steady energy, improve your sleep, and feel great by making just a few changes to your daily life the way I have. Your diabetes will become easier to manage, and you will reduce your risk of future complications.

actionable items
Being involved in the pharmacy industry, it's nice to hear that someone was able to break free from big pharma with actionable suggestions that anyone can try. It was a bit fast but occupied a 2 hour drive and easy to listen to. She really combined research and personal experience that we can all relate to. If you have had any problems with weight gain, aches and pains and just feeling older than you should, check this out.

Practical and actionable advice
Offers a unique perspective that comes from someone suffering from diabetes instead of a doctor. It’s clear that the author has a lot of knowledge on the subject and has transformed her health for the better. I liked the personal touch and the tips and advice are practical and actionable. These are things that everyone should be doing, not just those who are prediabetic or diabetic.

PHENOMENAL!!!
This is a very informative book! I even decided to buy the paperback version because I want to highlight and see some of the quotes from medical professionals and food lists Coleman provides for nutrition guidance. I am not a diabetic, but my A1C levels have been on the rise over the past couple of years despite eating a mostly healthy diet and exercising regularly. Ms. Coleman provides some troubleshooting recommendations that I am going to try. If you are struggling with your health, I highly recommend this book. I give it 10 stars!

helpful notes and recommendations
I mainly bought this book for my dad, he had diabetes for a few years now. And he's tried many methods and programs to control his diabetes condition. Problem is, many programs out there are somewhat hard to follow, not to say the consistency. For diabetes, controlling blood sugar is a life long battle that's in our every activity and every meal. You need to control everything very carefully, and also monitor for any spikes. Otherwise it could be problems big or small that are hard to say. So to make sure my dad can follow through this book and the methods in it, I sit through most of the book with him together. It's an audio version so it's really easy for us to listen to, just like watching TV, you just sit there and passively listen to it. we sometimes pause and discuss something then resume afterwards. But overall this is a very good book. It's from a diabetes patient's perspective, like talking to a peer who really understansd what my dad's going through.
