About this listen

The true story of John Battaglia - the coldhearted father who executed his two young daughters to spite his ex-wife

Dallas antiques dealer Mary Jean Pearle had a bitter history with her ex-husband, John David Battaglia, a former Marine and successful accountant - but even after the abuse she endured from him, she never thought he would go after their daughters, Faith and Liberty.

That is, until she listened helplessly over the phone as Faith made a heartrending plea for her life - which was followed by gunshots.

In this updated account of Battaglia's unthinkable crime - an act of filicide that was featured on 20/20 and would ultimately lead Texas to carry out the death sentence - Irene Pence recounts an unforgettable saga of violence, betrayal, and a mother's worst nightmare.

Contains mature themes.

Gripping!

Gripping story and certainly one the reader will put down only when it is finished.

Wow!

This was definitely a book that I didn’t want to take a break from. The story of this monster and the little lives lost was well put together and should shed light on how the system needs to do better at protecting our battered women and children. The narrator did an excellent job and highly recommend this book. If you are sensitive to detail then be warned because they give graphic details that maybe triggers for some.

Excellent story, terrific narrator

A heartbreaking account of an incredibly tragic story that highlights the flaws and shortcomings of law enforcement and the judicial system regarding domestic violence. Be prepared to cry!

Heartwrenching

I’d never heard of this case until I saw this come up, it keeps you on the edge of your seat; however, I couldn’t stop crying halfway through this book, the author does an amazing job at telling the stories of Faith and Liberty, as well as Michelle and Mary Jean. Colleen Marlo did a great job narrating this book and showed so much emotion when reading it

Incredibly troubling!!!!

This incredibly disheartening true story was told brilliantly. I can’t imagine the horror women and children of domestic violence endure daily. The writer stayed on course the entire time and the reader did and awesome job telling this chilling and sadly true story. You will NOT be sorry for choosing this book. I only wish it never had to be told and those two beautiful girls would still be here.

Fantastically written!

Enjoyed from beginning to end. This novel is brilliantly written. It never ceases to amaze me the history behind some of these tragic events. An escalation in violence is almost inevitable. You can just tell that something terrible is going to happen. Truly wish this had a better ending with the two girls still being alive. Be prepared for a broken heart.

Heartbreaking

I wish it had been longer with more info about their lives now. Did Mary Jean ever have any more kids, etc.

A very compelling read.

An important story for us all to hear and understand. Warning signs are often ignored, only because people do not know what to look for. Domestic violence is a serious issue and these brave women told their story to help others.
