About this listen

R.S. Belcher, the acclaimed author of The Six-Gun Tarot and The Shotgun Arcana, launches a gritty new urban fantasy series set in today's seedy occult underworld in Nightwise.

In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

Now a promise to a dying friend has Ballard on the trail of an escaped Serbian war criminal with friends in both high and low places - and a sinister history of blood sacrifices. Ballard is hell-bent on making Dusan Slorzack pay for his numerous atrocities, but Slorzack seems to have literally dropped off the face of the Earth, beyond the reach of his enemies, the Illuminati, and maybe even the devil himself. To find Slorzack, Ballard must follow a winding, treacherous path that stretches from Wall Street and Washington, DC, to backwoods hollows and truck stops while risking what's left of his very soul....

Almost full 5s, but ending is disappointing

Loved the main character. Wish there were more with him available online. Ending seemed kind of quick/unsophisticated/thin after the rest of the story was pretty devoloped/thick.

Brilliant narration!

Bronson Pinchot brings this story to life in vivid detail. The story begins with great mystery but unfortunately ends in convention and cliche.

Great Story and Great Partnership

What about Bronson Pinchot’s performance did you like?

Mr Pinchot's performace of this material reminded me of how well Dick Porter has captured the style and world of the J Mayberry novels. Each character (and there were many diverse ones from both this world and others) came together very, very well.

Any additional comments?

This is a terrific adult fantasy novel and the partnership between Mr Belcher and Pinchot is a great one that reminds me of the J Mayberry/D Porter partnership with the Joe Ledger stories! I hope that the author, narrator, and creative/production crew at Audible have more of this story and characters planned for the future, because I would quickly jump into that swimming pool. Kudos to the author for creating a story that I couldn't stop listening to and to Mr Pinchot for bringing such a diverse group of characters to life.

Blecher Must Write "The Book of Granny" Next.

If you could sum up Nightwise in three words, what would they be?

Creepy, Cool, Compelling (alliteration completely unintentional)

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nightwise?

Every moment with Granny, especially the last one!

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. He is awesome as the narrator of this book. His narration, along with its excellent reviews for this title, is why I gave this book a try when I was still on the fence, whether or not to use a credit to buy it. I have not read any of Belcher's other books.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I can't say that I did, but I can see how younger fans of horror/supernatural fiction would. Very similar to other books of its type, but with new and interesting spins on some old themes. And yes, a few unexpected surprises, too.

Any additional comments?

In my opinion, the best scenes were all about Granny. I've been left wanting more...of her story; beginning to end, and not just focused on the timeline represented in this book. I hope there are plans for a "Book of Granny" in this author's near future, with Bronson Pinchot as narrator. I, for one, would be happy to spare a credit for it.

More, please!!!

Loved it from start to finish! Fascinating characters with real personalities and real flaws. Story line kept me engaged and invested. Never predictable, never boring. Probably the best tour of the world of Magic that I've ever had. Highly recommended.

good story, bad narration

I thought the story was intriguing butt I absolutely could not get past the narration. I wasn't fond of the narrator whatsoever. and every time there was dialogue for the protagonist I couldn't help but to picture Matthew McConaughey.

Bought on a Whim, I'm Ready For a Series of these!

Good story line, fabulous narration, attractive and mysterious main character.
The synopsis mentions this is a kick off to a series of books, I sure hope so!
The only criticism I have is there were a few scenes in the book I felt went on a bit too long.
Otherwise I really like the main character, with all his faults, and I really look forward to Belcher adding to this.
I also think it would make a great movie or TV series.
I have to say, the narration really made the book. The southern accent of the main character is perfect and charming. I can't imagine it being narrated by anyone else going forward.

confusing and scattered story line

I was confused by the disjointed story line
ever and long dissertations of trivial references to magical themes. the language was overly crude . too many friends words.

Meh.

There's a lot of erotic smbd in the first half of the book that bored me. Then there's a lot of Latin chanting/mumbling. I tried to get into this book, but just couldn't. Narrator was great though!

Confusing

Confusing and doesn’t seem to have a clear plot. I generally love this genre of book, but this was not grabbing my attention..
