About this listen

Cam Richter, needing a break from his too eventful detective career, is in search of more peaceful pastures in the North Carolina countryside. He buys a 700-acre antebellum plantation, the perfect location for restful solitude, but it doesn't take long for him to discover that his new locale is not as quiet as he'd hoped.

Almost immediately, Cam finds himself caught up in mischievous pranks around his land, the site of a Civil War-era massacre. When the pranks turn hostile, however, he realizes he's been targeted by a killer who holds him responsible for something Cam is pretty sure he never did. As he tries to find out why someone wants him dead, he begins to uncover the secrets of his plantation and how the land's tragic history is still tangled up in the present.

Cam will need all of his resources, including his redoubtable German shepherd companions, to stay alive as he deals with a determined stalker, some very eccentric people, and all the entanglements of a place suddenly alive with secrets and the fruits of a bloody past.

Dick Hill has a good voice, and is a great narrator. But he only has one or two acceptable character voices, especially with Southern accents, and female characters. PT Deutermann's series of Cam Richter novels are all set in the South and all have at least one strong female character. Hill just mangles it, he really does. Once he chooses his few voices for the principle characters, he just bottoms out, and other characters are so bad it actually embarrasses me to hear them, especially because I feel I know them from the written books. A shame. I have read all of Deutermann's work in print, and this series I have read more than once. But I will not listen to any more. Not at all. Such a shame. And at these prices they could have a smaller talent come in and do the female parts (a general audible book complaint, by the way). It really makes me a little mad. Do yourself a favor and by the kindle or other e book version, and pass on Dick Hill doing the Cam Richter books... Any of them. But if you like Deutermann like I do, then try The Edge of Honor, where two narrators, male and female, do the work. While that may be the best, the other Deutermann work is OK as well as long as Dick Hill is not the voice talent.

Dick Hill really hurts

I very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I like to start with the first in a series and read straight through so after Cat Dancers I immediately went to Spider Mountain. Both were enjoyable, especially the dogs. Then Moonpool, which I do NOT recommend and suggest you skip entirely. The story is confusing and, in my opinion, badly written. It's only redeeming quality is the dogs. And I've just finished Nightwalkers, I liked it as well and will buy the next in the series when I find it. All that said, I always like Dick Hill and although his "female voices" are sometimes a bit like nails on a blackboard, he is one of the best!

Change of pace for Cam via small Confederate town

I've been a Deutermann fan since his first novel, The Edge of Honor. This was a good Cam Richter story, much, much better than Spider Mountain, which required way too much disbelief. Particularly compelling was his depiction of folks still living in the old old(!) South, and his portrayal of the subtleties of small-town politics.

This is a fun read with a great twist, as can be expected from Deutermann.

A Creditable Entry

Good story. Of course Cam is always leaving is gun in the car or other room which is weird especially when someone is after him. There were some weird issues around chapter 27 where is seemed to skip some setup pieces but overall a good book. I still need to go back and listen to Moonpool... I skipped it because the narrator was terrible.

I really enjoyed the story and the history of this book. The main character is not only interesting but very human in the decisions and mistakes he makes. Only negative thing was a chapter late in the book was flipped with another that made things confusing. Highly recommend this book.

Very enjoyable story and history
