NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • AN OPRAH BOOK CLUB PICK • A dazzling novel about a young Black woman who walks the streets of Oakland and stumbles headlong into the failure of its justice system. This debut of a blazingly original voice “bursts at the seams of every page and swallows you whole” (Tommy Orange, author of There There).

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, TIME, GOODREADS

Kiara and her brother, Marcus, are scraping by in an East Oakland apartment complex optimistically called the Regal-Hi. Both have dropped out of high school, their family fractured by death and prison

But while Marcus clings to his dream of rap stardom, Kiara hunts for work to pay their rent—which has more than doubled—and to keep the nine-year-old boy next door, abandoned by his mother, safe and fed. One night, what begins as a drunken misunderstanding with a stranger turns into the job Kiara never imagined wanting but now desperately needs: nightcrawling. Her world breaks open even further when her name surfaces in an investigation that exposes her as a key witness in a massive scandal within the Oakland Police Department.

Rich with raw beauty, electrifying intensity, and piercing vulnerability, Nightcrawling marks the stunning arrival of a voice unlike any we have heard before.

“Mottley writes with a lyrical abandon.”New York Times Book Review

Nightcrawling really is a powerful, poignant story worth your attention . . . Revelatory . . . My god—that voice. It’s sometimes too painful to keep reading, but always too urgent to stop.”—Ron Charles, Washington Post

Interview: ‘Nightcrawling’ Gives Voice to a Real Life Tragedy—and a Debut Author’s Triumph

Editorial Review

Last but definitely not least
June is a month so very nice, I insisted on doing my "Editor’s Select" twice! Soon after gulping down Cult Classic, I finally got the audio for one of the year’s most impressive debuts—and it was way too good not to squeeze it in at the last minute. Nightcrawling is an ambitious, lyrical, heart-shattering debut that’s almost impossible to believe was written by a teenager—but then again, I can’t imagine anyone else taking the reins of this story with such authenticity and fire. Leila Mottley, the former Youth Poet Laureate of Oakland, centers her first novel on her beloved hometown and a terrible injustice that happened there: the story of a young Black girl who literally stumbles onto sex work as a way to avoid eviction, and ends up sexually abused and exploited by a network of cops. Don’t let the dark subject matter turn you off. Mottley’s main character, Kiara, voiced by the uber-talented Joniece Abbott-Pratt, suffuses the story with piercing insights on race, gender, class, and family, not to mention exquisite moments of radiance, beauty, and hope. Not much older than Kiara herself, Mottley is a major new voice in fiction, and I predict we’re going to want to hear her every word. — Kat J.

Ordinarily I would have found the topics in this book too heavy to handle. Books about the brokenness of black life, homes, and families are too easy to find. This story had a lot to give and a lot to teach about how life and circumstances pull good people into bad choices. It doesn’t make excuses—it enlightens and builds empathy.

Heart wide open

Everything about Leila's book just grabs you from the very beginning. From the first page you are taken into Kiara's world and transported to a reality that the majority cannot fathom. There is beauty, brokenness, and extreme bravery in these pages. Leila's poetic heart shines through with breathtakingly beautiful words and rhythms. This is an all encompassing novel about the strength and resilience of a young black girl named Kiara trying to survive beyond circumstances that should have never been a part of her world, and unfortunately continue to be the reality for so many young girls....

Gripping !!

The author is an amazing writer. Her words beautifully reflect the characters’ response to the struggles and trauma of being young, black and without the love and support that is needed to survive in an atmosphere such as Oakland. I wish that I could have jumped into the story to save Kierra and Trevor. The innocent victims of an uncaring society

The author is very gifted. Beautifully written

Tragic, heartbreaking story,I was moved by Kia’s strength, love, nurturing and protective character, she brought the story of so many young girls caught in this unfortunate situation to light. I couldn’t stop listening…

CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNING-SEXUAL ASSAULT, BRUTALITY,

Please tread carefully if you are/have been a victim. This book is graphic and at be triggering for some. Additionally, this book is not for everyone. There needs to be a functional level of empathy and understanding of socio-economic and systemic barriers that impact minority groups. Please do some research on the novel and the author before deciding if it is something you would like to read. This may be an Oprah Book Club book, (which surprises me a bit) but again, this is not for everyone. Also, there is a slur used in the last hour of the book used to describe transgender people.

The narrator was excellent and gave each character life, which made listening to the book enjoyable. I understand the author was seventeen when she first authored the novel and I am quite impressed at how decently written it is. I know some previous reviewers say this is a downfall for the book, because she is young. Despite this, I hope her craft will only improve as she grows older.

Toward the last couple of hours of the book, the narration became quite long-winded in the monologues, which slows pacing of the book. The main character is an adolescent, so that may be the reason for the lengthy dialogue. I was not a fan of how the book ended, but I was not surprised at the outcome either.

Again, this book is solid but it is not for everyone. I appreciate the awareness the author is bringing to the systemic issues that present themselves in society and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Not For Everyone

I was so moved by this book. It’s amazing that such a young author would write something so compelling highlighting injustice as well as love.
