A Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine on Audible Pick

"A beautiful novel full of passion, secrets, courage and sacrifice." (Reese Witherspoon)

After the death of her beloved grandmother, a Cuban-American woman travels to Havana, where she discovers the roots of her identity - and unearths a family secret hidden since the revolution

Havana, 1958. The daughter of a sugar baron, 19-year-old Elisa Perez is part of Cuba's high society, where she is largely sheltered from the country's growing political unrest - until she embarks on a clandestine affair with a passionate revolutionary....

Miami, 2017. Freelance writer Marisol Ferrera grew up hearing romantic stories of Cuba from her late grandmother Elisa, who was forced to flee with her family during the revolution. Elisa's last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth. Arriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba's tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate.

When more family history comes to light and Marisol finds herself attracted to a man with secrets of his own, she'll need the lessons of her grandmother's past to help her understand the true meaning of courage.

good historical facts, boring fictional story

the only thing I liked about this book is that it brings awareness about the real situation for the people of Cuba, the evils of the Castro regime and Che Guevara. I couldn’t stand the character of Marisol

Interesting history, bland story

This book reads like a teenage romance novel. But it does give the reader a sense of Cuban life and history, which is good.

Audio Falls Flat

As someone mentioned in a previous review the audio was a bit off. A combination of low volume at times with the flat & low reading performance of the Marisol chapters made it very difficult to get through.

Good, not great.

This may be unpopular but it took me a LONG time to get into this one. I was over half way in before I actually started feeling invested in the story. I love the premise and the subject matter is important (learned a ton about Cuban history) but felt like the romance in the beginning was forced and not believable. It's worth a try if you enjoy learning a bit while you're reading but I had to force myself to finish this one - disappointing with all the raving reviews.

Narrators ruined the book

I listen to Audible every day on my commute to and from work. When I downloaded this title, it sounded so interesting. I enjoyed the story, but the narrators were so dull and boring, it made it difficult to listen too. And some days I just couldn't bring myself to listen, just couldn't do it. I would recommend purchasing the actual book but not the Audible version....

okay - a cursory look at cuban politics

Got the audiobook because I could not being myself to finish the physical copy. The story was fine and fairly predictable to a degree. It didn't hold my interest until the last few chapters. I would not have finished it if it wasn't for my book club.

Excellent!

I learned a great deal about Cuba and its history when I read this. The story is well written, and the narrator is captivating. Once I started, I didn't want to stop listening.

Beautifully written

I have fallen in love with this book and Cuba. A beautifully written story of the love for country and love of family. This summer we had a chance to visit Havana and did not go. I am regretting that decision now. How I would love to stroll down the Malecon and watch the sunset. #havana #cuba #bookclubbook #malecon #lovestory #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
