About this listen
The third in a series featuring Jeff Boon, a Confederate Civil War veteran who leaves his war-torn home with a group of settlers, intending to start over in Oregon.
The small wagon train continues their journey west as the trail takes them through Nebraska Territory. There they encounter warlike Indians who are rebelling against the encroachment of the white man and treaties broken by the U.S. Army, and the growing threat caused by the betrayal of Abe Hackett.

Story
The first in a series of novellas featuring Jeff Boon, a Confederate Civil War veteran who returns home after the war to find home is not the way he remembered it. Union raiders struck his home town, burning buildings and killing residents, including his mother. And he finds the survivors are not as he remembered them. War can change people, and he finds it has changed him, too. A stirring novella of the aftermath of war, and the affect it can have on the people who fight the battles, and the people left behind.

Story
No one had seen the innocuous rock on the long climb to the pass on the Oregon Trail, and when the last covered wagon in the long line rolled onto the lump of granite, it shouldn’t have made much of a difference, but it caused almost instant tragedy. Just seconds later, the wagon plunged over the edge of the narrow trail, then began its deadly, tumbling roll into the abyss, spewing its contents as it fell to its destruction. Her precious children had been trapped inside, and Rebecca could only watch in horror. Her children had been her life, and now she had nothing.

Rachel looked down at her husband’s dead body, the long knife protruding from his gut. She knew she’d be hanged or shot if she stayed in Missoula, so she’d have to run. But where could she go? The only place that came to mind was the hidden valley northwest of town. It was owned by a loner named Marsh Anderson, whom she had never met. The loud roar snapped Mrs. Doyle from her sleep, and she quickly slid from her bedroll, stepped to the tents flap, and pulled it aside seeing a bear standing on its hind legs just a few feet from her. What made it more horrifying was what she didn't see. The camp behind the bear was empty. She dropped the flap and turned to her the frightened boy standing behind her. He looked at his equally terrified nanny unaware that they had been abandoned to die in the wilderness.

United States Marshal War Adams stared at the telegram in disbelief. His father had been murdered? As difficult as it was to come to grips with the news, it would become more disturbing when he discovered that the person arrested for the crime was the nurse that his father had hired to ease his suffering from his killing disease. Her position gave her both the means and opportunity to commit the crime, and he knew that the nurse was the same woman whose husband he had shot and killed years earlier, giving her the motive.

Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. Story
When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He'd ride up on his white steed and break the curse I've been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time, how the fairytale twisted into something far more crooked—and darker—than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

But now a pompous rail boss named Arbuckle wants to put them out of business. Jake Fletcher thought he’d been blessed among all men when he stood at the aisle across from his bride. How such an ordinary man like himself had won her heart still astounded him. It wasn’t until a month later that he understood what had attracted her attention, and that discovery would drive him across the plains of Colorado and Kansas to find her.

Just too short.
These books are just too short. It seems like I start them and before I know it I’m at the end. Growing up in the Big Horn Basin, I love listening to the places being mentioned, because they’re my home and I imagine they could have been the stories of my ancestors. This series along with the McCabe series I think is at the top of my favorite list and yes above Louis Lamour even. Brad I encourage and implore you to keep going with these stories because I can’t get enough of them and Turner too is now my favorite narrator. Great job to you both.
