About this listen
“The real housewives of the Third Reich...[Wyllie] recounts their stories with a bracing combination of scholarship and an almost cinematic approach to spinning a compelling narrative” (Washington Post)
Nazi Wives is a fascinating look at the personal lives, psychological profiles, and marriages of the wives of officers in Hitler's inner circle.
Goering, Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich, Hess, Bormann - names synonymous with power and influence in the Third Reich. Perhaps less familiar are Carin, Emmy, Magda, Margarete, Lina, Ilse, and Gerda....
These are the women behind the infamous men - complex individuals with distinctive personalities who were captivated by Hitler and whose everyday lives were governed by Nazi ideology. Throughout the rise and fall of Nazism these women loved and lost, raised families, and quarreled with their husbands and each other, all the while jostling for position with the Fuhrer himself. Until now, they have been treated as minor characters, their significance ignored, as if they were unaware of their husbands' murderous acts, despite the evidence that was all around them: the stolen art on their walls, the slave labor in their homes, and the produce grown in concentration camps on their tables.
James Wyllie's Nazi Wives explores these women in detail for the first time, skillfully interweaving their stories through years of struggle, power, decline, and destruction into the post-war twilight of denial and delusion.

Towards the end of the 19th century and for the first few years of the 20th, a strange invasion took place in Britain. The citadel of power, privilege, and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, 50 years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From 1874 - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known "Dollar Princess", married Randolph Churchill - to 1905, dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage....

Story
The murder of the Romanov family in July 1918 horrified the world, and its aftershocks still reverberate today. In Putin's autocratic Russia, the Revolution itself is considered a crime, and its anniversary was largely ignored. In stark contrast, the centenary of the massacre of the imperial family will be commemorated in 2018 by a huge ceremony to be attended by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. While the murder itself has received major attention, what has never been investigated in detail are the various plots behind the scenes to save the family.

In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Story
After the failure of the Weimar Republic, the Nazis believed their mission was to "masculinize" life in Germany. Hermann Goering told women, "Take a pot, a dustpan and a broom, and marry a man", but many still became active participants in murder and mayhem. From the Reich Bride Schools through the Bund Deutscher Mädel and the bizarre Lebensborn Aryan breeding programme to the brothels of the Sicherheitsdienst, this book covers the lives of women in the Third Reich, concentrating on those who sought personal power and influence amid the chaos.

The Nuremberg Interviews reveals the chilling innermost thoughts of the former Nazi officials under indictment at the famous postwar trial. The architects of one of history’s greatest atrocities speak out about their lives, their careers in the Nazi Party, and their views on the Holocaust. Their reflections are recorded in a set of interviews conducted by a US Army psychiatrist. Dr. Leon Goldensohn was entrusted with monitoring the mental health of the two dozen German leaders charged with carrying out genocide, as well as that of many of the defense and prosecution witnesses.

Story
On February 13, 1945 at 10:03 p.m., British bombers began one of the most devastating attacks of WWII: the bombing of Dresden. The first contingent killed people and destroyed buildings, roads, and other structures. The second rained down fire, turning the streets into a blast furnace, the shelters into ovens, and whipping up a molten hurricane in which the citizens of Dresden were burned, baked, or suffocated to death.

Story
Germany was a deeply divided nation when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in 1933. As the shadow of the swastika lengthened, its citizens quickly came to realize that the Nazis' brutal programme was not optional. Everyone was expected to play their part in "national revival", especially those chosen as sacrificial victims. Life in the Third Reich draws on the recollections of those who lived through the rise and fall of one of the most vicious and sadistic regimes the world has ever seen.

Understanding Adolf Hitler's ideology provides insights into the mental world of an extremist politics that, over the course of the Third Reich, developed explosive energies culminating in the Second World War and the Holocaust. Too often the theories underlying National Socialism or Nazism are dismissed as an irrational hodgepodge of ideas. Yet that ideology drove Hitler's quest for power in 1933, colored everything in the Third Reich, and transformed him, however briefly, into the most powerful leader in the world.

Sorta slow
I would have probably enjoyed this book much more if there had been a decent narrator but to be honest she drove me crazy and I only half listened to the book. I am sure that if I decided to read this I would enjoy it better and actually get something out of it. As they say a narrator can either make or break a book for you and as far as I am concerned this was broke. Do yourself favor just buy the book and read it and don’t waste a credit for the audible version.

Excellent
I'm listening for a second time because it was so captivating.
I recommend slowing down the speed a bit... the "wives" names can be confusing at first, but afterwards it's very easy to follow...
The narrator is superb... and the story overall really fascinating. A great addition for those interested in WW2 period.

so much information that I didn't know
Nazi Wives is an inside look at the women married to the men at the top of the Reich. These are the women who loved, married and had children with some of the most horrific men in the Nazi party. They, alongside their husbands, followed Hitler. They hosted dinner parties that he attended. They hung the stolen artwork in their homes. They were part of the inner circle. And yet, most of their names were unknown to me and I was uncertain about what their fates were when the war ended.
Mr. Wyllie introduces the women, shows how their relationships worked, describes their interactions with Hitler, exposes the ways that the Holocaust was prominent in their lives. It is an enlightening book that left me feeling the same abhorrence that has affected me every time I have read about their husbands. It is a thoroughly-researched and well-written piece of nonfiction about a time that is discussed much, but with a micro view of something that is rarely mentioned. I am glad to have read it.

Burn in he'll beasts
Narrator was super. These woman would defend Jack the Ripper's actions if he was a Nazi or their idol Hitler Shaking my head. We MUST lean from the past or be destined to repeat! These Nazi wives wanted to ignore the cruelty and depravity of their husbands and their own cruelty, but karma will not

Scary
It is unbelievable to me how so many people have so much arrogance, lack of empathy for others, and how in this world of trump lies can drink the kool aide

A look at the more obscure Nazi's.
An interesting look at the wives of several Nazi officials, who are often ignored or overlooked by many historians. Excellent narration as well.
