About this listen

After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth's life changes when Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Darcy appears on the screen.

Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren't Mr. Darcy enough.

Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she's dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she's forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

A Cute and Charming Contemporary Romance

Would you listen to My Own Mr. Darcy again? Why?

Possibly! The narrator did a great job; her voice is sweet and enjoyable to listen to. The story is what you'd want and expect from a clean contemporary romance, with some drama and angst, an interesting love triangle, and some great characters and scenes. One thing I love about the books I've read by Karey White is the places she chooses to feature and how she describes them. It's like taking a tour while having a fun story unfold around you.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Own Mr. Darcy?

I really liked hearing Elizabeth in her element as she made choices and worked hard on a dream job, especially with the help of a sweet guy. (I'll avoid giving away the details and context of those scenes!) But there were other memorable moments too, from a first meeting to a hiking date to a friend's celebration.

Which character – as performed by Heidi Baker – was your favorite?

I think I liked Elizabeth best, because Heidi really seems to capture her voice and personality. It's like listening to a friend. But I think she did a great job with the guys too!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It was heartwarming when Elizabeth came to some realizations at a wedding!

Very predictable

I'm glad the female lead in the story is only 22 years old because otherwise it would be totally unbelievable. If you want a book that there is no cursing sex etc. but is totally predictable this is the book for you. Basically you know who she's going to end up with in the end there is absolutely no suspense at all. However like I said if you're looking for that type of book this is it.

Toe tingling romance

It was refreshingly clean and flirty and fun! I couldn't stop listening! It has smooth writing and I could easily put it down and come right back to it when I needed to. I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen and then I didn't! It made me think of my own romance and how lovely it is- what a great thing fora writer to be able to do!
The narrator is a little too bubbly for my personal taste and read a few things differently than I would have but she did a great job setting the right tone for each scene and the book in total. So glad I listened! (Even if I did stay up too late!) ;)

A Delightful Read

This was such a fun story to read, especiall for an Austen fan. The writing is very good, the characters very real and multi-dimensional, and the story draws you in from the very brginning. I really enjoyed it and the narration was wonderfully done.

I didn't want it to end!

My phone was in view as I listened the audible version of this book. I could see there was only 10 minutes of narration left. It was hard to except this great story was coming to a close. I truly didn't want it to end.

This book is easy to loose yourself in and very hard to put down. It's the perfect mixture of romance, happiness, suspense and unpredictability.

If you go with the Audible version you will also find the narrator to have a delightful/easy on the ears voice.

If you are reading the reviews, I'm telling you now to pick up this novel. It's a great read!

Clean and boring.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

In about hour 2, I got sick of "he said," "I said," "she said." There are synonyms for "said," the author just didn't use any.

What could Karey White have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not drawn out the story for so long. I was stupid when I was 22/23, but c'mon... Lizzie is too indecisive. Also, instead of "said," the author could have used words like replied, exclaimed, protested, etc.

It ended too quickly.
"I wanna be with you!"
"You sure?"
"Yup."
YAY happy ending.

And that was it. Then it ended. What happened to them? I went through 8 hours for a quick ending? NO! Tell me what happens! Do they marry? Do their families get along? Why did he forgive her so quickly? Are they together forever? I want to know! Womp womp, no epilogue.

Which character – as performed by Heidi Baker – was your favorite?

I can't really pinpoint, Heidi Baker gave a great performace overall. Her voice made the story tolerable.

Was My Own Mr. Darcy worth the listening time?

Not really. In the third hour, I groaned when I noticed there were 5 more hours of the story. I still soldiered on.

Any additional comments?

This is a great concept. I love P&P, so this was an exciting prospective read. And then I listened to it. And I regretted it. I was looking forward to listening to a clean and wholesome romance (needed a break from the sexy books), so I'm glad this book had that going for it. I really did groan when I found out I had 5 hours left in the book. I just wanted it to end. I feel like I completed an audio marathon.

I loved Chad. Matt was a bit of a jerk, but he could have been worse. I wanted to smack Lizzie upside the head.

I'm not into interior design, but the author did a great job with these parts. Those were probably my favorite bits of the book. She desribed these parts so well, I was starting to think, "Hey, maybe this would be cool for the future." Then, I continued to be bored by the rest of the story.
