About this listen

When I stumbled across the listing for Pevensey House, I knew I had found a way for my family to be free, and I didn’t hesitate. I should have, I know that now....

When Thea sees her old family home is up for sale - a beautiful old rectory in the small town where she and her childhood sweetheart, now husband, Drew, grew up - she knows she has to have it. Her parents moved her away suddenly when she was 11, but her childhood there was filled with happy memories. Drew seems less sure, but Thea is certain it’s the perfect place to raise their two children.

But as the last boxes are unpacked, Thea can’t seem to settle. She thought the move would bring her family closer together, but Drew is getting more distant by the day. And why do old friends cross to the other side of the road when they see her coming?

Alone in the house, exploring the creaky corridors she used to cartwheel down as a young girl, Thea smiles as she slides open the loose panel she once used as a hiding place. But it only takes one look at the faded local newspaper clipping hidden inside for her world to shatter.

It’s not long before news of the scandal spreads further and the whole town turns against her. Thea’s life is in free fall as her head and her heart wrestle between taking the blame and fighting for her innocence. She is sure of only three things: Her husband has a secret, her idyllic childhood is a lie, and they never, ever should have moved back here....

This heart-wrenching and gripping family drama will have you hooked from the very first moment. Perfect for anyone who loves Amanda Prowse, Liane Moriarty, and Diane Chamberlain.

This book was Amazing!!! so so good! The characters were fabulous and I always knew which character was talking when. The narration was superb! Reminiscent of big little lies.

so so good

Except for the narrator’s histrionics—an otherwise excellent job—I enjoyed this book. The crying, wailing and sniffling were distracting but fortunately, intermittent.

Good story

Secrets are never kept and it doesn't matter how long it takes to unravel it, something will trigger the memory & the floodgates will open. The title is what drew me to the story and as I was reading it, I just knew for sure that the husband had a hand in the secret. His part in it was not enough to title the book to. The story is quite catching & will have you wanting to jump ahead to the issue. The heroine of the story handles it in a true magnificent fashion that demonstrated her strengths & weaknesses. Overall, the book is a good read for age groups over 21.

Wrong Title; Good Storyline

I do not usually stay with books I do not like; I simply return them. But this one had some elements I found appealing. I did nearly complete the book because I liked the world building, the narration, until the incessant sobbing began, and the pretext. Most of the characters were worthy enough. However, the plot was entirely predictable, which I can handle if other things are in place, but in this case the believability was not happening. I know how much goes into writing a book and for that reason, I do not want to be insulting because this writer does have some promise. Not a book I would recommend though.

I had hoped for the best...

And least of a psychological one at that. Read more as a long winded fictional drama which is lovely for fans of that type of book but I am not one of them and this book certainly didn’t make me a convert. I have never wailed in my kife which could certainly be an indicator of good life fortune or happenstance— regardless the main character spends a lot of time wailing. I think more than the average -- wail moderate woman. 9 hours until she developed a backbone and then another 3 to confirm the creeping suspicion she that this is not a thriller but a mystery with legitimately— 1 odd occurrence— that for the briefest of gasps has the listener/ reader thinking— gaslighting? Did the hubby do it? Or maybe the chipper AF neighbor?? Reader. Do not be fooled. Do not be hoodwinked by this sculduggery and tom-foolery. it is the most meager of traps to keep the psychological thriller crowd hopeful- until the books last gasp— only for u to find out it was almost an irrelevant after thought in its relation to the overall plot. The narrator did a fine job though reading this nonsense however so good on her. Instant. Return.

(And so annoyed about it I wrote a review— which speaks volumes to the not insubstantial degree of annoyance)

Not a mystery or thriller. No spoilers but a warning.

In case you can’t tell, I think this book was awful. It was perhaps the worst book I’ve ever had the displeasure of listening to. How in the name of all that is holy could the editors have listened to the final draft and thought, “Yep! Sounds great. Let’s go with this!” It’s simply awful! Not only was the storyline ridiculous, non-interesting and painfully predictable pretty early on, but the narrator is seriously the worst I’ve ever heard. Please know that I am not exaggerating. She was by far the absolute worst. Listening to her wails, cries, and attempts at various voice tones and accents was like listening to nails on a chalkboard. I literally had to put the book away because I couldn’t take it anymore. Trust me, if you decide to purchase this book despite my review, you will want your money or your credit back and wish you’d heeded my warning. Because this book was so bad, I refuse to purchase anything else by this author OR narrator and I’ve never felt the need to make such a drastic decision. That should let everyone know the depth of my disgust.

Awful awful awful

I almost quit listening half way through and now wish I had, it’s full of unnecessary drama, I don’t know if it was just the story or the narrator but I had my absolute fill of sobbing and cry talking, the main character is ridiculous. There was no mystery or intrigue, just an over top retelling of gossipy housewife drama punctuated with lots of sniveling.

Don’t waste your time and money
