Enjoyable story

Susanne's did a nice job with narration. This was not one of the best of this series.

Good... but...

Very good instalment in the series, but sadly no developments in the Frank and Sarah storyline.

Well done

After Sarah delivers a young woman's baby she is shocked when she discovers that she is in a brothel. Even more shocked when the woman pleads with Sarah to help her escape. This single event leads Sarah to request Frank's help and they both become embroiled in high drama and finally murder. Clever plotting and engaging characters made this a wonderful read. I love this series. My only complaint was the narration. I did not care for the narrator's voice characterizations.

Another intriguing story

Really enjoying this series. In the beginning of this installment, we see a more impulsive, naive Sarah than usual. But that does set up the plot for the rest of the story. The new narrator is much better at capturing the atmosphere and mood. She gives the story more life than the previous narrator did. However, as others have implied, she can’t do Malloy’s voice. She can make a somewhat man-like, gravelly sound, but she doesn’t know how to give him a personality or give him varying degrees of emotion. Therefore, she simply yells his voice as though he’s angry and exasperated all the time (except in his internal thoughts, which are done in the pleasant narrative voice). He sounds like an unpleasant fella, which makes it hard to fathom Sarah being interested in him. It’s worth getting used to for the well-plotted mystery, though it’s sad that Malloy has been terribly misrepresented by both narrators up to this point. UPDATE: In book 12, Malloy’s voice improves in that he shouts less and doesn’t sound as angry.

Story good, narration less so

In general, I have enjoyed this series, written by Victoria Thompson, about midwife Sarah Brandt and the various people associated with her (policeman Frank Malloy, and two young foster daughters she has rescued in previous books). But I have found recent books to be uneven in both writing and narration. This one is actually quite good, though.

Happy to say that I think the author has done a very good job with this story--it held my interest throughout. But I don't think the narration was up to snuff. Suzanne Toren did a good job of separating voices--it was always clear who was speaking. But her voice for Frank Malloy was grating and (to me) left him sounding unlikeable (and he's actually one of my favorite characters in the story).

This is a pretty good story in which Sarah is called to deliver a baby in a brothel, and she learns that the mother is not there by choice, and gets involved in trying to rescue her--and of course, this leads to her typical adventures, murders, working with Malloy to try to solve them--per the usual adventures in this series.

I think it is a fairly good series--a couple earlier ones had left me wondering if both author and narrator(s) were slipping, but the story in this one is engaging, much like the earlier ones in the series. I just wish the narrator had done a better job with Malloy--since he is a major character. Still, I recommend this book.
