Story
As eager as Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, is to meet her husband’s newly discovered illegitimate half sister, she does not want it to happen like this: in the keeper's house at Newgate. Yes, that Newgate, the abject prison filled with squalor and misery to which Verity Lark has been consigned for murder. Found standing over the slain corpse of an old tormentor with a still-warm pistol in her hand, she is obviously guilty. It is an open-and-shut case with little for an unduly curious duchess to investigate. Except it all seems a little too simple and straightforward.

Publisher's summary
The chill of winter has descended on London. But for Sebastian Bell and Gemma Tate, there will be little cheer this season…
Gemma Tate has a new job and a new address. She is putting her past—her memories of nursing in the Crimean war—behind her. But when Jacob Harrow, a journalist with ties to Crimea, is found brutally killed, Gemma is pulled into the investigation.
Police inspector Sebastian Bell works alone. But when all signs point towards a dark secret Harrow brought back from the war, he realizes he needs Gemma’s help to untangle the mystery. But raking up the past has devastating consequences when Gemma’s friend, another nurse from Crimea, is found murdered in her boarding house…
As dark betrayals come tumbling out, Gemma and Sebastian are on a dangerous race to uncover the truth. But in her determination to solve the case, could one rash act by Gemma place her next in the killer’s sights…?
The second addictive and atmospheric Tate and Bell mystery is perfect for fans of Andrea Penrose, the Lady Sherlock mysteries, and Miss Scarlet and the Duke.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Great mystery
Second in series and another fine mystery. Enjoy the characters. No disrespect, but I do wish they would change narrators. Book is filled with serious subjects of war and murder and narrator is theatrical and perhaps better suited to something less serious.

Enjoying Bell and Tate
I really enjoy the Bell and Tate series. Imogen Church is always brilliant and does each character justice in her narration. I really like the length of these books as well compared to the shorter Redmond and Haze books. it's great to see familiar characters earlier in their journey. I miss this Daniel Haze in the other series. Can't wait for the next book!

Not to give too much away but I absolutely love how she ties in Haze from Redmond and Haze and I look forward to seeing how she intertwines them in the future. Love that there is a story beyond the murders in both series as well. It makes it a saga you want to continue to engage in.
