About this listen
Read by the author.
#1 New York Times Bestseller
Guthrie persuasively renders the evolution of a hard-won religious belief that makes room for imperfection and "does not require us to ignore... the sorrows we experience or the unjustness we see but to believe past it." This openhearted offering inspires.—Publishers Weekly
Mostly what God does is love you.
If we could believe this, really believe this, how different would we be? How different would our lives be? How different would our world be?
If you ever struggle with your connection to God (or whether you even feel connected to a faith at all!), you're not alone. Especially in our modern world, with its relentless, never-ending news cycle, we can all grapple with such questions. Do we do that alone, with despair and resignation? Or do we make sense of it with God, and with hope? In these uncertain times, could believing in the power of divine love make the most sense?
In this collection of essays, Savannah Guthrie shares why she believes it does. Unspooling personal stories from her own joys and sorrows as a daughter, mother, wife, friend, and professional journalist, the award-winning TODAY show coanchor and New York Times bestselling author explores the place of faith in everyday life.
Sharing hard-won wisdom forged from mountaintop triumphs, crushing failures, and even the mundane moments of day-to-day living, Mostly What God Does reveals the transformative ways that belief in God helps us discover real hope for this life and beyond.
A perfect companion to your morning cup of coffee, this incisive volume—not a memoir but a beautiful tapestry of reflections crafted as a spiritual manual—includes:
- a fresh, biblically rooted look at six essentials of faith: love, presence, grace, hope, gratitude, and purpose;
- an honest exploration of questions, doubts, and fears about the love of God;
- a dose of encouragement for the faith-full, the faith-curious, and the faith-less; and
- …and much more.
This deeply personal collection is designed to engage the practical ways that God loves you—not just the world, but you—and to inspire you to venture down a path of faith that is authentic, hopeful, destiny-shaping, and ultimately life-changing.

Writer and podcaster Erin Moon has questions, and this book is her open letter for anyone who feels iffy, conflicted, or just downright devastated by this disconnect. With empathy, insight, and the therapy of memes and a good laugh, Erin maps out not a rigid prescription but an open-hearted pathway for you to reclaim what you once loved about your faith home and light a match to the rest.

Your emotions are not something to suppress or ignore. They are meant to be felt, examined, and shared.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
The 10 enlightening (and often humorous) lectures of Medieval Myths and Mysteries will show you how far from the “dark” times of legend these centuries were. Uncover the facts about the Knights Templar. Reveal the truth behind the tales of legendary creatures like the Questing Beast and the unicorn. Trace the events of the Black Death and the ways it altered the world in its wake, and much more. With Professor Armstrong, you will dig deep into the ways that later generations reshaped the narrative of the medieval years and perpetuated the myths.

The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering, we can’t be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us.

Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

Do you ever get a glimpse of yourself that is exactly who you want to be, but always seems just out of reach? The happier, kinder, less stressed, more courageous you? The ideal version of you isn't imaginary at all. It's actually the authentic you trying to break through. And it’s not a future version of yourself you have to chase. The true you may be new to you, but it’s not new to God. It's the you he knew all along.

A must read… and if you ever want to give a thoughtful gift… this is it
I just finished this… I was hooked on her insight and candor from the first paragraph… I loved it so much I bought a print copy as a journal prompt for myself. This is simply a must read … or at least listen to book. Who would have thought my soft news favorite from the Today Show was so wise and insightful… I will probably listen to or read from certain chapters every day going forward until I can’t read, hear … and/or I’m dead. I am not an influencer and I don’t get nor do I want any commissions for my endorsement… I just want you to read this book for you… to make your life and perspective a little richer… because the message is as simple as … What God Does is Love You. I am tasked to live in the light as well… so out of love… I encourage you. Take from it what you want… this is not preachy it’s insightful commentary about life, love, and purpose.

Authentic beautiful telling of God's deep love for us all!
Bravo to Savannah Guthrie for telling the story. I deeply appreciate her stepping out of her comfort zone to tell the greatest story of all and for doing so in such a beautiful and tender and authentic way. I was moved, challenged and inspired. For those who don't know God I encourage you to open up the pages or hit play and be introduced to a God who deeply loves you and cares for you.

Right on target!
The author is a word wizard and makes the reader go, “That’s right, that’s right. “
Not only do you read the book, but you feel the book. Her examples are commonplace and easily understood. Her personal experiences make you feel like you’re having coffee and discussing life in general, oh and how do you feel about Jesus?
All in all, a superlative book that I will read again and again when I need a reminder that mostly what God does is love me.

Unabashed truth in the most loving way.
You can read this book forward, backward, beginning even in the middle. Each chapter can stand on its own.
At times tears ran down my cheeks, not because it was sad or even because the writing made me sad but because the words, the thoughts spoke so deeply to my heart & soul. This is a book I can come back to over & over to be reminded of God’s all encompassing love. Thank you Savanna.
