Il protagonista, che è anche il narratore, sposa una donna molto intelligente di nome Morella, la quale lo coinvolge nei propri studi, che spaziano dalla filosofia all'occultismo. Questo lato oscuro di Morella finisce però per turbarlo profondamente, mutando i suoi sentimenti per la moglie in astio. Prima di morire dando alla luce una bambina, Morella, predice al marito che un triste avvenire lo aspetta...
