About this listen

When Chick Ferguson made plans to go to the Yukon, he wasn’t planning on taking his newlywed Mary. He definitely was not planning on spending much of the next 18 years in the wilderness. For he was just a photographer with a little studio in a little town in Montana. His business was failing and having heard of the riches of the fur trade he was hoping to spend a year or two trapping, making a stake and returning to his routine life. But he didn’t figure on love....

For this is a story of romance. A story of survival, hardship, success, trials, adventure, happiness, and romance. A romance of the wilderness and the trapline, and a romance with Mary - the bravest and most wonderful woman in the North. One could only wish for a partner of such courage and companionship. The only white woman in a vast and unforgiving territory. The closest city, many hundreds of miles. And the only visitors to be expected, the unwanted kind.

How many women could endure such hardship and learn to love it? She had many chances to leave and go back to a normal life in the states, but she always returned to her man and her wilderness. Against all odds, Chick and Mary built a life in the Far North and made a successful living on the trapline. Though a life full of struggles and danger they both could not imagine living any other way. With a wonderful writing style that makes you feel as if you are there, Chick Ferguson takes us along with him on his adventures in the Far North.

Awesome old story of a wilderness trap line.

I learned a great deal about what trapping was really like in the 1930's and 40's. Very interesting book! I was attached to the book from the very beginning and felt invested in the success of them as trappers!

An amazing true story of grit and adventure in the north country

This was an excellent story of two people matching wits and determination with the extreme cold and brutality of the north. From their trips to and from the cabin by canoe to sled dog journey to raising their child in the wilderness it is an accurate portrayal of life in the far north.

During the time of the great depression and out of work in Montana Mr. Ferguson decides to go north to run traps for a few years and get a fresh start. Little knowing what it would become. Little knowing the hardships he and his wife would have to overcome.

An absolutely amazing TRUE story! Justin Spencer does a great job narrating. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the great outdoors and is interested to hear about the way it was before the airplane and snow machine. Highly recommended.

A Racially Biased Story

For me, the racially inspired rants and innuendo against Native Americans detract from an otherwise enjoyable story.

Excellent Read!

well performed and well written

An amazing adventure of a husband and wife on a trapline in the far north. Facing hardship and hard times, from bears destroying caches and eating all their food to falling through the ice in sub zero temperatures.

So racist, it’s painful to listen to

On one hand, the content was interesting, but I found the way the author speaks about indigenous peoples to be too much to tolerate. At first, I tried to think of it in an historical context, but it just kept coming up over and over. Had to stop listening.

Racist and sexist storytelling

Blatantly racist and sexist storytelling. Will request a refund, it is that bad. Truly abysmal.
