About this listen

Everyday life is so frantic and full of troubles that we have largely forgotten how to live a joyful existence. We try so hard to be happy that we often end up missing the most important parts of our lives. In Mindfulness, Oxford professor Mark Williams and award-winning journalist Danny Penman reveal the secrets to living a happier and less anxious, stressful, and exhausting life.

Based on the techniques of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, the unique program developed by Williams and his colleagues, this book offers simple and straightforward forms of mindfulness meditation that can be done by anyone—and it can take just 10 to 20 minutes a day for the full benefits to be revealed.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mindfulness to be better than the print version?

I could never find time to meditate and always felt guilty. His meditations are short and so relaxing. I bookmarked them all so that I could easily listen to them. The reader has the most peaceful voice.

Clear, concise, and easily digestible introduction to mindfulness meditation. Chapters are short. A practical program to follow with a small time commitment is outlined near the end followed by ten meditations, none lasting more than ten minutes. Reader has an English accent and and calm demeanor that is instantly soothing.

It certainly is better than the paper version. Just to hear Mark William's voice. He has wonderful voice that has a calming effect, at least for me. It helps me to start my meditation just to focus on his voice. Awesome!

Calming effect!

I enjoyed this book, but would have really apprecihated it so much if the meditations mentioned in the chapter would play after it states to try them. It moves on to the next chapter, leaving the reader thinking they don't have the meditations in the kindle version. After all chapters are read, then you will find the meditations as chapters themselves. it's hard to get it together while listening & pausing.

Very nice read

Is there anything you would change about this book?

For a text on mindfulness and stress/anxiety reduction, the introduction and first couple chapters are disturbingly alarmist. It's emphasized that we have to use this technique, as taught by these authors, or we'll be doing it wrong. At one point, the author asks the listener to attune to their body to see they they feel any tiredness. They dwell on these feelings, bringing them to the forefront of the listener's mind, then essentially say, "That sucks, doesn't it? Better let us fix it for you."Also, the text repeatedly refers to numbered meditations, but the audiobook chapters aren't labelled, just numbered, so it isn't at all obvious which "chapter" the listener should listen to for, say, "Meditation 7."

What did you like best about this story?

I think this book gives a good outline of why mindfulness is valuable and how to get started, including some good exercises and meditations. The MBCT approach developed by the authors and partially illustrated in the book has been shown to be clinically effective.

Surprisingly alarmist; poorly organized
