When people look at Melissa, they think they see a boy named George. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl. Melissa thinks she’ll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. Melissa really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part... because she's a boy.
With the help of her best friend, Kelly, Melissa comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte—but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.

From her first moment at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino knows she's an outcast. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, a major infraction in high-school society, so her old friends won't talk to her, and people she doesn't know glare at her. She retreats into her head, where the lies and hypocrisies of high school stand in stark relief to her own silence, making her all the more mute.

Eltahawy knows the patriarchy is alive and well, and she is fed up: Sexually assaulted during hajj at 15. Groped on the dance floor of a night club in Montreal at 50. Countless other injustices in the years between. Illuminating her call to action are stories of activists and ordinary women around the world who are tapping into their inner fury, crossing the lines of race, class, faith, and gender that make it so hard for marginalized women to be heard. Rather than teach women and girls to survive the poisonous system they have found themselves in, Eltahawy arms them to dismantle it.

When Aspen Baker had an abortion at the age of 24, she felt caught between the warring pro-life and pro-choice factions, with no safe space to share her conflicted feelings. In this hopeful and moving book, Baker describes how she and Exhale, the organization she cofounded, developed their "pro-voice" philosophy and a set of tools that enable anyone to have respectful, compassionate exchanges about even the most contentious topics. Initially distrusted by both sides, Exhale now receives postabortion referrals from pro-life and pro-choice organizations.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Rick's never questioned much. He's gone along with his best friend Jeff even when Jeff's acted like a bully and a jerk. He's let his father joke with him about which hot girls he might want to date even though that kind of talk always makes him uncomfortable. And he hasn't given his own identity much thought, because everyone else around him seemed to have figured it out.

Story
When Donovan left his copy of The Adventurers on the kitchen counter, he didn't think his mom would read it—much less have a problem with it. It's just an adventure novel about two characters trying to stop an evil genius...right? But soon the entire town is freaking out about whether the book's main characters are gay, Donovan's mom is trying to get the book removed from the school curriculum, and Donovan is caught in the middle. Donovan doesn't really know if the two boys fall in love at the end or not—but he does know this: even if they do, it shouldn't matter.

In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears.

Annabelle Blake fully expects this school year to be the same as every other: same teachers, same classmates, same, same, same. So she’s elated to discover there’s a new kid in town. To Annabelle, Bailey is a breath of fresh air. She loves hearing about their life in Seattle, meeting their loquacious (and kinda corny) parents, and hanging out at their massive house. Author and photographer Susan Kuklin met and interviewed six transgender or gender-neutral young adults and used her considerable skills to represent them thoughtfully and respectfully before, during, and after their personal acknowledgment of gender preference. Each honest discussion and disclosure, whether joyful or heartbreaking, is completely different from the other because of family dynamics, living situations, gender, and the transition these teens make in recognition of their true selves.

I loved this book so much!! It was absolutely sweet and wholesome and showed the experience of a young trans girl in a relatable and touching way. I wish there were more children's books like this, and I wish I'd read this as a kid. It would have helped me accept myself.
The narration here was also highly enjoyable and generally I recommend this to everyone, no matter what age!

Wow
I received this book for free in order to give an honest opinion. Wow! As a mother I can only imagine how hard it would be for a child to feel so completely cut off from who he/she felt they where inside.,transgender is so new to many of us. But it is very sad.this book really help me to see things from the child's point. Very grateful. I'm also a foster parent I'll keep this book as an aide should I ever need it to help another child.

The book I didn't know I needed
I wish a book like this had been available to me as a child. Melissa is a heartwarming tale about a young girl struggling to come to terms with something outside her control, and grow into herself. As an adult member of the same community as her, who was in very similar situations that went more poorly than hers, I wish I could share this book with my childhood self. the writing is spot on, and the content is easy to digest for it's target audience while still being impactful for adults as well. A copy will always be in both my home library, and my classroom library, ready for any kid that needs it.

Wow, a happy ending!
This book is an amazing portrayal of the trans experience from a trans writer and narrator. As a Cis person, I felt like I finally saw from George's perspective the daily slights and indignities suffered by kids whose identitities do not match the gender assigned to them at birth. Every time George was misgendered, even by those who love her, I winced. So many stories about trans kids are syrupy-sweet optimism or scary and depressing; To have a portrayal be realistic but with a happy ending felt good and real. I hope to share the print book with my students this year, and give my students another perspective of what it may be like for trans people in our world.

Easily a Contender for Best Short Story, 2016
I rarely give 5 stars across the board, but this book deserves it. The story is timely, relevant and important, but so much more than that. This is one of those stories that is written and performed so brilliantly that the writing and performance seems to fade away. We forget that we are reading or listening to a book.
While this book is in the "Kids/Young Adult" genre, it really should just be in the "Human" category, it's that authentic.
Of my entire Audible library (167 titles to date), George has easily made it to the top 10, probably even the top 5.

Excellent introduction to transfer issues for children
This book was an excellent introduction to transfer issues for elementary and junior high students. It follows the life of a 4th grade transgender girl, George, as deals with constantly being misgendered and struggles to come out to her best friend and family, as well as to her school as a whole. The book has a good dash of realism regarding the struggles cisgender people often have in accepting trans individuals and family members, without being too overwhelming for its young readers. As for the narration, Ms. Clayton did a wonderful, lively job.
