About this listen
Who Ya Gonna Call
Med Service!
Scattered through the galaxy are thousands of worlds colonized by humans. Many have native microbes dangerous to the human immigrants. Others have diseases brought to them accidentally - or on purpose - by visiting ships. When millions of lives are threatened, it's a job for the Interstellar Medical Service, and a Med Ship is sent to solve the problem.
Calhoun is the best the Med Service has, and hard experience has taught him that often the major obstacle to curing the sick is...the sick. And removing that kind of obstacle may take very strong medicine. To find a cure for a disease, Calhoun has the help of his small animal companion Murgatroyd, a formal - a species with the most powerful immune system in the galaxy. But to find a cure for hysteria, prejudice, crime, and even war is much more complicated, requiring considerable ingenuity. Fortunately, ingenuity is something that Calhoun has in good supply....

Story
Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

Story
In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

Collection of 1960s Space Stories!
As a big Murray Leinster fan I’m so glad they made a audiobook version of all his Med Ship Man stories. While some of the future technology described in the book is already obsolete they are a great read. Most of these stories were written in the 1960s and the author passed away in 1975.

Dr. Calhoun to the rescue!
Classic Space Opera, the Med Ship series of stories is an old favorite and it was great to find them all collected under one cover. Because they were written as separate novels at the time of publication the first few pages of each review the basics of the Med Ship Universe so first time readers who had not necessarily read any of the other installments understand who the lead characters are and what there motivations are. When reading them in rapid sequence the repetition of the basic facts can be mildly offputting, but that is an artifact of how they were originally published, not a failing of the stories or the author.
Calhoun is the perpetual young Doctor, a few years past residency and expert in diplomatic skills needed to pass on knew medical insights to the planets he visits without offending the governments or medical establishments too much. At least that is the theory, but these are adventure stories so in each case something has gone terribly wrong, often due to greed or corruption, and he must find a way to fix it to promote the health of the people he encounters. Each of the included novels has a unique mystery to be solved complete with its own solutions and maneuverings.
The Audible version is a fun listen and brings the adventures to life in a different way than my minds eye.

Awful Narrator
I was thrilled to see an audiobook version of one of my childhood favorites. Unfortunately, the narrator totally ruined it. He has no sense of rhythm. His cadance is off and he reads suspenseful passages as though they were a commercial. Extremely disappointing.
