Publisher's summary

Here is the timeless story of Mary Poppins, the world's favorite nanny, and her magical adventures with the Banks family.

Mary Poppins is like no other nanny the Banks children have ever seen. It all starts when their new nanny is blown by the east wind onto the doorstep of the Banks house, carrying a parrot-headed umbrella and a magic carpetbag. She becomes a most unusual nanny to Jane, Michael, and the twins. Who else but Mary Poppins can slide up banisters, pull an entire armchair out of an empty carpetbag, and make a dose of medicine taste like delicious lime-juice cordial? A day with Mary Poppins is a day of magic and make-believe come to life!

Such fun!!!

I cannot remember the last time that I enjoyed a book this much! Yes, it is different than the Disney movie, (Dick VanDyke would have gotten much less screen time with this version), but the book is full of delightful stories and Sophie Thompson makes them come alive. Seriously, I listen to this as I'm walking and I see everything that takes place as if I'm there. She is, by far, the best narrator that I have listened to as of yet. I am 59 years old, and Mary Poppins makes me feel as though I'm a kid again!

Weird story, and horrible reader.

Would you try another book from P. L. Travers and/or Sophie Thompson?

The book is pretty much random little stories combining into a big story, so i wouldn't read a book from this author again..but maybe it was just the reader that ruined it for me.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The whole book wasn't that interesting.

Was Mary Poppins worth the listening time?

Fun short listen, creative storyline.

Any additional comments?

The reader comes up with the most annoying voices for characters and makes a lot of high pitch noises.

Not A Julie Andrews Musical!

I bought This story for a family trip, thinking I would enjoy a deeper look into the mysterious character of the beloved "Mary Poppins" as shown in the Disney film with Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. I was disappointed! While the book is the basis for the Disney Film there is little resemblance to to story in the movie. Further the personality if the "real Mary Poppins" seemed quirky and inconsistent...I did find out after the author P.L Travers fiercely protested Disney's portrayal of her original work, but we have already fallen in love with the new Mary, I don't think we will ever enjoy this series.

Fabulous reading of a classic

I can only assume many others are reviewing a different narrator when complain about her voice being shrill etc. It was shrill only when the text explicitly called for a character’s voice to be so, and otherwise was very pleasant to the ear, with well-delineated tones and accents for each character. I rarely like audiobook narrators’ performances, but I thought this one was excellent, and my theatrical and picky 8-year old concurred.

Hard to understand

I listened to this with my kids (aged 8 and 5), and we ALL had a hard time understanding everything that was happening, partly the accent, partly the speed at which the characters speak, and it all made this (just okay) book less enjoyable.

Wonderful and magical!

A wonderful story full of magic and fun. Very well-performed by a talented actress doing all of the voice characterizations. I am a 61 year-old man, and saw the movie in the theaters as a young boy. I really enjoyed hearing this audiobook of this first Mary Poppins book!
