Madly, Deeply is a rare invitation into the mind of Alan Rickman—one of the most magnetic, beloved performers of our time.

From his breakout role in Die Hard to his outstanding, multifaceted performances in the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and more, Alan Rickman cemented his legacy as a world-class actor. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice, and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate audiences today.

But Rickman’s ability to breathe life into projects wasn't confined to just his performances. As you'll find, Rickman's diaries detail the extraordinary and the ordinary, flitting between worldly and witty and gossipy, while remaining utterly candid throughout. He takes us inside his home, on trips with friends across the globe, and on the sets of films and plays ranging from Sense and Sensibility, to Noël Coward's Private Lives, to the final film he directed, A Little Chaos.

Running from 1993 to his death in 2016, the diaries provide singular insight into Rickman's public and private life. Reading them is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close companion. Meet Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveler, the fan, the director, the enthusiast; in short, the man beyond the icon.

Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton.

It’s Alan Rickman journal. Need I say more?

Such an amazing audiobook. I truly enjoyed seeing Mr. Rickman’s world through his journal. The narrative was excellent.

Alan Rickman has always been a mystery until I listened to Madly,Deeply. He played such beautiful characters and well.

No story - just actors doing their thing

Feel like this is what Alan Rickman would have said if he had read this. I am American but lived in the UK for years so I could follow a lot of the name drops but still had to stop often to Google various IMDb pages. I felt it interesting in parts but sterile and sometimes emotionless. He went to a lot of parties, travelled endlessly as well as consumed a lot of wine and food. It’s a life and as Lindsey Duncan said once in the diary of a shared friend, “He did alright.”

A Must

Obviously I wished he would have recorded this so we could hear in his own voice. But his voice comes through so clear even when read by someone else. Little stories, vignettes that give insight into this private person. And, you could feel the love & respect he had for people. Especially women. He was a wonderful human!

Riveting, impactful for the generation that knew him as Hans, Turpin and Snape. Memorable.

I enjoyed and loved hearing from Alan’s entries of his thoughts and opinions throughout his life and career. The narrator at times does a good impression of Alan during some of the early years entries. By the final and last years of Alan’s diary entries, it had me in tears and emotional. I knew him only as Snape, growing up with the books, along with the movie releases, but then I got to learn more about him through these memories of his. Alan was a great human being, who cared about not only the art of acting but to create impressionable stories that can last in our lives.

As mentioned in the introduction, it was indeed a true "pleasure spending time in his company."

Ehh

I was so excited to listen to this book! I love Alan so much-who doesn’t! I think this book put me to sleep so there is that! I had to come back to it multiple times trying to get through it. So many times I feel like the people on the screen and the people they really are are so far more fascinating- I didn’t find that!
