The Pax Romana has long been shorthand for the empire’s golden age. Stretching from Caledonia to Arabia, Rome ruled over a quarter of the world’s population. It was the wealthiest and most formidable state in the history of humankind. Pax is a captivating narrative history of Rome at the height of its power. The evolution of the Arab empire is one of the supreme narratives of ancient history, a story dazzlingly rich in drama, character, and achievement. In this exciting and sweeping history - the third in his trilogy of books on the ancient world - Tom Holland describes how the Arabs emerged to carve out a stupefyingly vast dominion in a matter of decades, overcoming seemingly insuperable odds to create an imperial civilization.

Story
Author and historian Tom Holland returns to his roots in Roman history and the audience he cultivated with Rubicon—his masterful, witty, brilliantly researched popular history of the fall of the Roman republic—with Dynasty, a luridly fascinating history of the reign of the first five Roman emperors. Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman emperors. It's a colorful story of rule and ruination, from the rise of Augustus to the death of Nero.

Story
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Henry VIII: The Quest for Fame by John Guy, read by John Banks. Henry VIII's reign transformed the physical and spiritual landscape of England. Magnificent, tyrannical, a strong ruler, a 'pillager of the commonwealth', this most notorious of kings remains a figure of extreme contradictions: a devout traditionalist who oversaw a cataclysmic rupture with the church in Rome, a talented, charismatic, imposing figure who nevertheless could not bear to meet people's eyes when he talked to them.

Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion - an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus - was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history.

Story
In the fifth century BC, a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves, but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history.

Story
At the approach of the first millennium, the Christians of Europe did not seem likely candidates for future greatness. They saw no future beyond the widely anticipated Second Coming of Christ. But when the world did not end, the peoples of Western Europe suddenly found themselves with no choice but to begin the heroic task of building a Jerusalem on Earth. In The Forge of Christendom, Tom Holland masterfully describes this remarkable new age, a time of caliphs and Viking sea kings, the spread of castles, and the invention of knighthood.

In her international bestseller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

Story
In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Dynasty continues Rubicon's story, opening where that book ended: with the murder of Julius Caesar. This is the period of the first and perhaps greatest Roman emperors. It's a colorful story of rule and ruination, from the rise of Augustus to the death of Nero.

In the city-state of Sparta, young Gorgo’s mother gives a warning with her dying breath: the Persians are coming. The princess Gorgo, weaned on her nurse’s stories of gods and shapeshifters, never forgets her mother’s last words.

Story
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

I am a first time user and I wanted to use a book that I knew the outcome already. I read this book over 15 years ago and it's just as fascinating now as it was then. Richard E. Grant made the words come alive for me he did a better job with the characters than I did in my mind all that time ago

Decent, but I wouldn't get this as an audiobook
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. It was entertaining, and relatively short. If it were longer my answer would be different. Although the novel was entertaining, it wasn't necessarily a quality piece.
Would you be willing to try another book from Tom Holland? Why or why not?
Maybe, it depends on the content and reviews. I wouldn't buy the sequel to this book though.
What does Richard E. Grant bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He was great at portraying the characters. He did a great job with Polidori.
Could you see Lord of the Dead the Secret History of Byron being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I suppose it could, but it probably wouldn't do very well. Or maybe it would; bad movies become blockbuster hits inexplicably. With that in mind I could see Robert Pattinson as Byron, Kristen Stewart as Caroline Lamb, Michael Cera as Polidori.
Any additional comments?
Try to get this one at the library, or find a used copy. It's worth reading if you're really into Byron and his connection to vampires (fictionally of course). But if you take your Romantics seriously, skip it.

abridged version
I read this book many years ago and would say it was one of the best vampire stories ever. Most intreging and realistic in the web Tom Hollow created between real and fictional caractors. this was so lost in this version the audible although not horrible left much to be desired it practically starts in the middle of the book just touching on two of the most interesting and scary elements of the story. I would highly suggest that this is bacicly a spoiler so I would say skip this and reading the book .

if you are a real vampire fan...
... you will adore this. it is Richard E. Grant reading a gorgeously-written scholarly vampire novel.
the mythos is intriguing.
the kill scenes are more sensuous than any I've read thus far.
it's Lord Byron.
written by a man born in Oxford, who went to Cambridge University.
Cambridge scholars who write genre fiction are as rare as hens' teeth. read this!

The Truth Be Told
I discovered this book on a dusty shelf years ago. It was my dear brothers mothers. A sleeveless copy, very old looking indeed. I asked to borrow it, as if it had chosen me, specifically! I read it repeatedly, to say the least. Thanks to this wretched age of technology. I have the pleasure of listening to it come to life! It's a most beautiful gift, only a child may know. To have a storyteller weave magically, the characters and scenes from the book. Tom Holland, now there's a being I wouldn't mind conversing with before either of our undoing! Along with Sir Richard E. Grant, for undoubtedly he understands, and cherishes the secret documents that have been burned, infinitely into our search. Great work gentleman, as well as all involved. (M.G.B.)
