Editorial reviews

If you've heard the phrase "learn from your mistakes" your whole life, but still aren't sure you are getting the lessons, this audiobook is for you. Robert Singer uses his own mistakes and life experiences to illustrate the lessons he thinks we'd all do well to learn. Stephen Bel Davies narrates this audiobook in a raspingly round voice, with a luxurious range of tones. He has a wonderful reading voice and really animates the vividly detailed prose. This audio is generous with its advice, and readers can pick and choose what is useful to them, whether they are looking to gain self-esteem in the personal, romantic, familial, or professional arenas.

The stuff that nobody taught you in school nor at home. Teach it to your children and grandchildren.

Good advice but on a Basic level

This is a book worth listening to but it is very basic and sometimes that’s important however if you listen to some other self-help/self discovery literature this might come off repetitive but it is well put together. Good luck on your journey

Some good stuff, some not

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I wouldn't recommend this to a friend. It seems like it's written as advice to the author's teenage child. from a very cynical father. It's basically organized as "here's how you're going to get screwed; here's how I dealt with it."

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Maybe given some useful advice, versus "stay away from this, stay away from that"

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Wow, the narration was AWFUL!!! I mean, bless the little actor's heart, he put his heart and soul into acting out the book in the most dramatic fashion. Trouble is, it's a non-fiction book. His interpretation was way off. His voice sounded like Bea Aurthur from the Golden Girls or something. So, imagine, Bea Aurthur dramatically acting out a reading of the newspaper. You'll get the idea.

Cuts to the chase, with just enough detail

This story, this lesson shared, is not what you think / expect. It is about freeing yourself, so that others can be free, too. It's, actually, about doing the right things for yourself, in order to serve the greater good.

Still priceless 30+ years later!

I read this book way back when it had been recently published as an angst-filled teenager trying to figure out this thing called ‘life’ — and listening to it now I realize how much DID stick with me all these years and how much I should have made this mandatory reading every other year (because of the valuable lessons I forgot).
The way it just … flows, makes it all the more enjoyable.
Definitely one of my all time favorite books.
Many thanks RR!
