About this listen

The autobiography of global human rights icon Nelson Mandela is "riveting...both a brilliant description of a diabolical system and a testament to the power of the spirit to transcend it" (Washington Post).

Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience! *

Nelson Mandela was one of the great moral and political leaders of his time: An international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. After his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela was at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is still revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

Long Walk to Freedom is his moving and exhilarating autobiography, destined to take its place among the finest memoirs of history's greatest figures. Here for the first time, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela told the extraordinary story of his life - an epic of struggle, setback, renewed hope, and ultimate triumph.

The book that inspired the major motion picture Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

History told in first person

I liked the narration and the enhanced background music was subtle and non-intrusive. I enjoyed that feature of the audible book. The story was certainly remarkable. I was curious if 27 years in prison would make the autobiography boring. It is a long book, and yet it held my interest all the way through. You rarely get to hear a complex history told so well in first person. I am looking forward to seeing the movie too, in order to better visualize the places described in the book. Glad I read the book first, to get a sense of the entirety of the autobiography. This book will stick with me for a long time.

Wonderful

I listened to this book as a prelude to my visit to South Africa. It was amazing!! I have so much more appreciation for the struggles and victories in South Africa for all races. Once in a while, a person is born with the skill and humanity to move the human race forward. Such a man was Mandela and I say this as a Caucasian female. Everyone should read this book. I

Must read - Inspiring on many level

Until this book I had not realized how little I knew about South Africa and Mandela himself.
I will listen to it again.
The quiet narration tone is captivating, it feels intimate, as if Mandela himself was telling the story.
The music is there at the right time and in the right tone making the listening experience really enjoyable but not distracting from the content.
What a leader!! So much to learn...

Moving and Powerful

Mandiba's words were epicly narrated by Boatman. Mandela gave a true insight of his life to which every person could/should read.

A moving story about a man who lived his faith in God and in humanity. Mr. Mandela's life is a story worth telling and retelling. The story and the narration are gifts beyond measure.

One of my best books ever.

Great story. As someone who moved to South Africa with my family on my late 40s to start a new life, the story has always intrigued me. Mandela's leadership provided the best possible transition one could hope for. The work is still not done and some in the ANC have destroyed ot of the goodwill, but this story reminds us all of the vision.

A great mind.

Enlightening

Enlightening - I can not wait to “read” the next related books and to refine how I tell history & how I learn from it going forward

What a great life!

A giant of a human being. After what all he was put through, he still had the vision to understand that white South Africa had a part to play in the future of his country. I hope that his vision of South Africa endures for a long time to come.

Maybe this could put anger in perspective

It’s hard to quantify how great a man Nelson Mandela was. Though he had shortcomings and anger like everybody else he was able to departmentalize this feeling. Just think of how amazing this man truly was to be jailed for over two decades and come out and become the president of a nation. A special man. South Africa and the world was lucky to have him.
