Publisher's summary

A terrified young woman asks Miss Silver for help unmasking someone who has threatened her life.

Rachel Traherne does not want to meet Maud Silver. She does not want to tell her that someone has threatened her life, because she does not want that dreadful fact to be true. But see Miss Silver she must, for the stout, old-fashioned detective is the only person in London who may be able to keep her safe.

Rachel has been receiving threatening letters about her deceased father's fortune. The first two letters were vague; the third said simply, "Get ready to die." Since then she has been nearly killed three times: first by a flight of sabotaged stairs, second by fire, and third by a box of poisoned chocolates. She fears it may be a family member, jealous of her inheritance and willing to kill to get it. But who could it be? Miss Silver is going to find out.

Kept me Interested

This was a Good story and very believable with quite good characters. It was very well written and quaint. I recommend if you like cozy mysteries.

Love Miss Silver, but a weaker entry

I love the Miss Silver mysteries, but liked this story less than the previous entries in the series. The good characters were very good, if anything suffering due to their own goodness, and the less likable characters were thoroughly unlikable. And of course, predictable romance that eventually runs smooth. Perhaps the Miss Silver mysteries are just too alike in these regards for my taste. Diana Bishop is, as always, a delightful narrator.

Why the Bum Reviews?

I enjoyed this one immensely. A subtly tense situation, a cast of suspects all of whom could be the one trying to bump off our heroine. A few surprising twists. And Miss Silver is a sterling student of human nature.

One reviewer likened Wentworth's style to that of Agatha Christie, but I beg to differ. Wentworth is a far more perceptive writer, both of details, atmospheres and people. Which may be another reason why I enjoyed this one so much. And Diana Bishop serves up the fine writing with an equally fine performance.

Good book

This was the first mystery I couldn't figure out. I didn't worse the answer until my fourth try. Worth the read. Listened in Audible.

Good example of a classic British mystery

A rather thin plot peopled with plenty of "usual suspects". Good writing, similar style to Agatha Christie, although the story is not as compelling as a Dame Agatha plot. Perfect narrator for this style of writing.

Definitely not one of Ms. Wentworth's best

I am a real fan of this series by Patricia Wentworth, but this one is a real dud. Given that Ms. Wentworth was incredibly prolific, with 32 novels in the Miss Silver series alone, and over 40 other novels to her credit, she is entitled to have a few that do not hit the mark. This one starred a lead character who is too unintelligent to be interesting. The entire setup is so contrived that the listener is bored from the start since the action is very predictable. I gave up after the second chapter. There are many others which are so much better. If you love this series, you can just take a miss on this one.
