I'm a big fan of the series. I thought this one was well-plotted. The author's misery at his own school is deeply reflected in this one (again). It is hard for me to accept that such utter cruelty and bad behavior is the norm. At any rate, some of it is well-explained with surprising plot twists. During the course of this installment, I could easily list the Major Flaws in Emily...hard to like her, really, and the change in narrator didn't help. She sounded about 45 years in voice, and not the Emily I know, though the narrator was fine in her own way...just that a change is hard to take in this case. I also see Emily with a big crease between her brows because she is so often scowling or looking sour. Yet...I do really enjoy falling into the series and it is quite absorbing. I've read comments about this volume being sexist against men, but most of the females in the book are portrayed as deeply flawed, so I don't buy that at all.

Great book, continues the story well and we get to learn all about Laughter school. Ended on a total cliffhanger.

Why oh why does he keep making Emily a stupid helpless little girl? I can't understand it and I hope it changes.

Emily kicks butt in this book. We see her like never before finally growing into her power. A wonderful read that will keep your attention the whole way through.

Out of the 22 books in this series this has to be the darkest. While no spoilers the problems our Heroine face in this one are darker than any others on the unnamed world. very creepy

Malevolent

I realize after about 20 books, so stories might start to get stale. And I realize that some of the books seemed to go nowhere, but this one grabbed me by the honches and didn't let go. I love the story and the ending was a total surprise. I realize I am not a fan of the performer, but still a great read.

It’s weird how these YA authors all seem to turn into Ayn Rand given enough success. The series is quickly devolving into unlimited capitalism good and women bad.

In fact the women are so bad that, you know what? They’re where the idea of rule by divine right comes from.

A young girl effectively drugs and tapes a man, but the women shown as authorities choose to overlook it because either the girl was strong enough to do it, or he was asking for it.

The idea that a woman not being interested in a manly man must be a lesbian was played for a laugh in the last book, but now the concept is on full display as the corrupt leaders of an all girls school are painted as oppressive fascist lesbians.

I’m sure there might have been a way to tell this story without using such clumsy analogies, but dude just went full steam ahead with Hitler and Stalin references.

The author equates feminists to white suprematists.

I've continued to follow this series despite my misgivings. though I'm not sure if I will continue it. It's misandrist, and just one bad political take after another. That's why I wonder if maybe Mr. Nuttall is just a boomer using the story to promote his paradoxically juvinile libertarian views. I'm starting to think that's the only point of the story. It's not all bad obviously, the story can at times be engaging but to be honest I originally chose the book for Tavia Gilbert and I while I know that Saskia Maarleveld is of course doing her best it's still just not the same. There should be a straight up ban on changing the narrator midstream barring some unavoidable circumstances such as the death of the original narrator. I suggest avoiding this series unless you feel like you need a little indoctrination today.
