About this listen
As America suffered,
Borders were defined and
Lines in the Sand were drawn.
Cross them...you suffer the consequences.
The critically acclaimed Lone Star Series continues with Line in the Sand. Author Bobby Akart masterfully intertwines historical fact with plausible fiction in this postapocalyptic EMP survival fiction series that continues to follow the saga of the Armstrong family, Texas ranchers who have prepared for the worst but now must deal with those who have not.
Major and Lucy Armstrong's four children are spread around the globe and are in a race against time to return to Texas before societal collapse takes America to the depths of human depravity. They use their ingenuity, grit, and faith to persevere but find themselves facing a most unexpected enemy.
The Lone Star Series is a thought-provoking, gut-wrenching look into a postapocalyptic country devastated by nuclear destruction.
Would you be willing to cross the lines in the sand to survive?
Note: The Lone Star Series does not contain strong language. It is intended to entertain and inform audiences of all ages, including teens and young adults.
Although some scenes depict the realistic threat our nation faces from a nuclear war and the societal collapse that will result in the aftermath, it does not contain graphic scenes typical of other books in the postapocalyptic genre.
I believe more of our young people need to lead a preparedness lifestyle. Studies show that our millennials do not have any of the basic survival skills. By writing this series free of vulgarities and gratuitous sexual innuendo, I've intended it to be suitable for everyone.
Thanks.

For decades, American administrations have forced our military to be neutered in many respects - hampered by restrained rules of engagement, passed in strength by Russia and China, and tested by rogue nations like North Korea and Iran. As a result, nuclear Armageddon hangs over us like a mighty sword. Military analysts agree that the United States can't start World War III. Why? We might lose. This is the book you've been looking for: a deep, dark conspiracy that should delight those who loved the Jason Bourne movies, as well as fans of authors Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, and Stephen Hunter. You won't believe what happens when free speech slams into the messy realities of national security. Meet Nick Woods, a former Marine Scout Sniper, who used to be one of our country's greatest operatives. Meet Allen Green, a ballsy reporter in his fifties, who's desperate to break the biggest story since Watergate.

Story
A terrorist bomb explodes during a South Korean celebration of the anniversary of the election of its first president. Alarms are raised in Washington. No one is claiming responsibility. The first suspect is North Korea. Could it be making a power play against South Korea and unification? If so, how will the U.S. respond? Paul Hood, Director of the Op-Center, must answer these questions. The Op-Center, a largely autonomous new agency which takes on the government's toughest security problems, is only six months old, and has never been given a foreign crisis until now.

The Only Thing Worth Dying For chronicles the most important mission in the early days of the Global War on Terror, when the men on the ground knew little about the enemy - and their commanders in Washington knew even less. With unprecedented access to surviving members of ODA 574, key war planners, and Karzai himself, award-winning author Eric Blehm cuts through the noise of politicians and high-level military officials to narrate, for the first time, a story of uncommon bravery and terrible sacrifice.

Lots of Action
4.5 out of 5 stars
As with all of Akart's other books - this one was full of facts about prepping, surviving, and making it out when others will perish. But it's also full of a well thought out plot where the United States is plunged into a nightmarish situation.
Lines in the Sand continues the journey of the rodeo kids along with Duncan and Sook's. They are closer to home than ever but will come across numerous issues along the way (and mentioning them would spoil the story!) It also tells of the continued survival of the Armstrong ranch as they figure out how to survive and maybe even thrive in this new world. Set in a world where the lights are out everywhere but in Texas - the new Republic of Texas will have to make hard decisions to continue to be okay.
I realized while trying to write out the description of Lines in the Sand that it was going to be a hard book to review without spoiling some parts of it. I'm going to try my best, but I won't make any promises. So be warned - there may be spoilers ahead (and there will definitely be spoilers to the first two books).
The EMP has happened - the rodeo kids are not close to home when more bad things happen to them. They have to stay away from major cities to survive - but rely on each other more than they ever thought they had to. Their relationship/friendship really shined in this book. Akart allowed them to take one of the three major story arcs this time and I'm glad he did. Their story was fascinating and the things they ran into and saw on their journey was memorable.
As I predicted at the finale of Beyond Borders - Duncan and Sook's journey and the relationship seemed to take the main stage in this one as they came to terms with their new world along with their budding relationship. Sook was a welcome female addition to the series - she helps round out the aggressive testosterone in this series and I think that Akart put her here to soften it up a bit.
The Armstrong Ranch is a fascinating place and I'm curious to see how Akart will continue to grow and explain it - it feels like a place that at least one book will take place at. Thankfully - he's done a good job building it up in the first few books. I can tell something is coming.
Lines in the Sand definitely has the most death and destruction of any of the books in this series and maybe even in all of Akart's books (definitely the fastest loss of life). But it was believable and totally based in fact. The action started at the beginning and never really let up.
The very end of this book had me in real legitimate happy tears. I was not prepared for the emotion that was brought out of me, but I'm glad it did. I wasn't sure if I was going to rate this a 4 or a 5 and the last few minutes had me settle right in the middle. Any book that can bring that kind of emotion is pretty great in my book.
Overall, a really enjoyable book (I started it on Tuesday afternoon and finished it Wednesday evening). I couldn't put it down - I found myself listening pretty much everywhere so that I could get to the end. Akart writes in a way that keeps you coming back for me. He gives you just enough to slightly curb your appetite - while still leaving you begging for more.

Multiple subplots; one well written story
This series keeps getting better! There are multiple subplots running simultaneously each focusing on a particular character or group of characters. I love that we see the big picture by being brought into the experiences of each. The rodeo kids hit a number of speed bumps in their travels, but this loving group has a fun, positive camaraderie that you can’t help but enjoy. Meanwhile Duncan and Sook face their own challenges while learning more about each other and trying to get to the safety of the ranch. While there are many other characters/ character groups, it is easy to follow along with the rich details woven within the story.
Sean Runnette uses his voice to bring the story to life with his narration. I enjoy listening to him and his female voices, especially, are excellent. Another Bobby Akart book and series that should be added to every Audible library.
