About this listen

Named to the American Library Association’s Reference & User Services (RUSA) Listen List!

Combining the emotional depth of The Art of Racing in the Rain with the magical spirit of The Life of Pi, Lily and the Octopus is an epic adventure of the heart.

When you listen to Lily and the Octopus, you will be taken on an unforgettable ride. The magic of this novel is in the listening, and we don't want to spoil it by giving away too many details. We can tell you that this is a story about that special someone: the one you trust, the one you can't live without. For Ted Flask, that someone special is his aging companion, Lily, who happens to be a dog.

Lily and the Octopus reminds us how it feels to love fiercely, how difficult it can be to let go, and how the fight for those we love is the greatest fight of all.

Remember the last book you told someone they had to listen to? Lily and the Octopus is the next one.

Critic reviews

"Michael Urie narrates with a heartfelt passion that makes one giggle and laugh, nod in understanding and sob with sorrow. Urie's authentic emotion comes out in every character, whether it's Lily the dog's excitement, Ted the human's frustration, or the nameless octopus's apathy." ( AudioFile)

Don't miss this book!

If you love a dog, or have ever loved a dog, you must read this book. I laughed, cried, laughed some more and shed much eye rain. Now I need to go hug my dog and never let her go.

Tenderly creative, provacative

amazing performance by narrator. a loving, lovely story of love and loss. I'll be recommending for a support group I facilitate. looking at cancer through this author's eyes may help others to accept the journey.

What an emotional ride!

4.5 star. I really liked it. Such a beautiful story about a man and his beloved puppy. I bawled at the end, several times.

The voice and performance was really great! 5 stars.

Great for listening in the car or on walks as the chapters aren't really long, and the story is easy to follow.

Spectacular listen!!

What did you love best about Lily and the Octopus?

The narration. I thought Michael Urie did a wonderful job narrating this book. The voice for Lilly was so spot on that I laughed nearly every time he spoke! I have small dogs and it was exactly the way I would imagine them speaking. The last line of the book resonates with me still. SO perfect.

Any additional comments?

I absolutely adored this book. Yes, I have small dogs that have been my children since college so this book hits home with me. But I still think the story is wonderful. The imagination and storytelling brought something to this book that I didn't expect (it reminded me of I'll Give You The Sun in this sense). It was a beautiful story that I will absolutely listen to again. Worth the credit!!!!!!!!!!!

For a great cry

I laughed so much at the beginning of the book that I wasn't quite ready for the later chapters which I listened to for over thirty minutes, crying the whole time. I took a couple days off reading before finishing Lily and the Octopus, because I knew it would be heart rending and I wanted to make sure that I was home when I listened to it. The nararator was excellent at bringing all the emotions of the book to life. if you love your pets as if they are your 4 legged kids you need to listen to this book. I'm still crying as I type this. it was that good.

This is why you listen to audible...

This book is responsible for strange looks received at stoplights bc I was caught laughing until tears...not to mention the fact I was forced to show up to work with red tinned eyes from the full on ugly cry sustained during the commute. This book is about Ted, who falls in love with Lily. And they go on fabulous adventures and rage you along for the ride. It’s about friendship and hope and being authentic and loss and love...it’s about selfless love and embracing your today. What a beautiful story, and the audible performance is spectacular. If you only ever listen to one book, let it be this one.
