About this listen

A respected Nigerian psychologist travels to a remote southern border town to uncover the truth about the murder of three university students.

When Dr. Philip Taiwo is called on by a powerful Nigerian politician to investigate the public torture and murder of three university students in Port Harcourt, he has no idea that he’s about to be enveloped by a perilous case that is far from cold.

Philip is not a detective. He’s an investigative psychologist, an academic more interested in figuring out the why of a crime than actually solving it. But when he steps off the plane and into the dizzying frenzy of the provincial airport, he soon realizes that the mob-driven murder of the Okriki Three isn't as straightforward as he thought. With the help of his loyal and streetwise personal driver, Chika, Philip must work against those actively conspiring against him to parse together the truth of what happened to these students.

A thrilling and atmospheric mystery, and an unforgettable portrait of the contemporary Nigerian sociopolitical landscape, Lightseekers is a wrenching novel tackling the porousness between the first and third worlds, the enduring strength of tribalism and homeland identity, and the human need for connection in the face of isolation.

Unique Crime Novel

I love reading unique crime thrillers, especially ones where I learn new things and this one fit the bill. Herein, I learned more about the fascinating culture of Nigeria, and also learned alternative perspectives on human behavior. Thanks to the author’s knowledge of criminal psychology. I hope Femi writes another and it seems the way this story ended, we could have a sequel. PS ...
The narrator is superb, adding juicy accents and delicious laughs to his reading.

Good read but…

I’m glad I read this book. It caused me to learn more about the college culture in Nigeria. The characters were well developed. The plot was interesting but wrapped up quickly at the end.

Great book with great characters

I really enjoyed this book, it had great pacing, style and tone throughout. The backdrop for the story is unique to me and probably most that listen, I had no real knowledge of life in Nigeria but this book offers a rare glimpse into a world that on one hand is as modern as most westernized countries and on the other still struggling to find it's way in this rapidly changing world we all live in. sort of like Texas

The story serves as a bit of an allegory about the dangers of social media while delivering an intelligent fast paced crime drama containing some of the freshest characters I've read in a long time.

The narration is great and fitting to a story where if I was reading this book I would of butchered every name in it.

loved it, till the end

I really really enjoyed this book, very well written and the narrator was fun and brought life to the story. my only complaint about him was that there wasn't much differentiation between the chapters when it switched characters. I did not like the ending though, way too many loose ends and felt anti climactic

Highly recommend this book!

I enjoyed this book, a real departure from my usual British mysteries. With that said, in spite of some cultural differences, which were interesting, I found the plot intriguing. It kept me engaged until the conclusion and looking forward to the next book by this author. In the meantime, I’m planning to do some research on Nigeria so I’m more able to picture scenes in the book. Thanks!

Uneven but interesting

Uneven, but worth a shot. It's a crime novel set in contemporary Nigeria. The protagonist, "investigative psychologist" Philip Taiwo, tries to understand the atrocious murder in the university town of Okriki.

I enjoyed parts of the story, but I think it doesn't manage to convincingly tie Taiwo's personal life issues with the primary investigation. Above all, though, the narrative lacks thrills that would make it exciting throughout the way some unputdownable crime novels are.

I'm glad I've listened to it, but I'm not awed.

Interesting setting, okay story

The Nigerian setting and characters made this book - kudos to the narrator for the accents. The story itself was just okay. I was expecting something more complex and sinister, but it was not complicated and wrapped up quickly. I wasn’t very interested in general, but listened to the full book.

A Rare Read

I really enjoyed the book because it was not a typical read and it had me guessing throughout the book. I also learned a lot about the culture of Nigeria. I felt like I was there in Nigeria experiencing the characters interactions and it was wonderful. Thank you Mr. Femi. The narrator also made the book come to life and did a great job. I hope to read more by this author in the near future.
