About this listen

From a New York Times best-selling and Hugo award-winning author comes a modern masterwork of science fiction, introducing a captain, his crew, and a detective as they unravel a horrifying solar system wide conspiracy that begins with a single missing girl.

Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.

Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, the Scopuli, they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the Universe.

A treat for sci fi enthusiasts

I was very surprised with this book as I came in with mediocre expectations. Everything fits together perfectly from the cold and hard sci-fi universe to the flawed but interesting characters. The pacing left me dazzled; Every time my attention started to wander the book steps it up and before you know it another hour of reading has passed. The big plot puncher really marries two genres in a way other stories have failed to, and it leaves you wanting to read the rest of the series. I fell in love with this book. It's one of those books like Hyperion or Use of Weapons that you wish you could read again for the first time.

Jefferson Mays does a great job, and if you keep reading the series you will appreciate his consistency.

I highly recommend.

Excellent book, expertly narrated!

I enjoyed the SYFY series but got lost in the character development and lost interest before the end of season 2. This book held my captivated attention from beginning to end. Unlike the crew of the series which feels haphazardly thrown together, the book describes a highly efficient and collaborative team, where each role is filled correctly (not inefficiently) and though the challenges facing them seem insurmountable, it’s a thrill ride from cover to cover.

Eager to continue the series, and happy to have it in my library!

Actually better than the TV show

I'm a fan of the TV show but this is so much better because I get to see what's going on in their heads. Can't wait to see what new insights I learn.

Brilliantly written and delivered

I really did not know what to expect. For someone who has read hundreds of books, that is saying something.

This was a truly original work with complex and likeable characters. Bravo!

Worth it in the end

Great beginning hook that really grabs and you asking for more, while slowly complicating the story. Rather dull, at points needless filler in the middle that had been checked out for the most part. Ending payoff that really satisfied me and had me wondering what would happen the whole time. Narrator does a good job, especially considering the number and range of characters in this story.

Good Listen

Slow start but decent story, the author used too many analogies for my taste. Well performed. I will however be listening to the next book in the series.

I loved every minute of it

This is a great story. It had me on the edge of my seat. I went to the grocery store with headphones on. I took extra walks, extra bathroom trips, and found any excuse to keep listening. It isn't too heavy, but it isn't too light, either, and the ending took me completely by surprise. Now I am off to start book two.
