Publisher's summary

The biggest science fiction series of the decade comes to an incredible conclusion in the ninth and final novel in James S.A. Corey’s Hugo-award winning space opera that inspired the Prime Original series.

Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

The Laconian Empire has fallen, setting the 1,300 solar systems free from the rule of Winston Duarte. But the ancient enemy that killed the gate builders is awake, and the war against our universe has begun again.

In the dead system of Adro, Elvi Okoye leads a desperate scientific mission to understand what the gate builders were and what destroyed them, even if it means compromising herself and the half-alien children who bear the weight of her investigation. Through the wide-flung systems of humanity, Colonel Aliana Tanaka hunts for Duarte’s missing daughter...and the shattered emperor himself. And on the Rocinante, James Holden and his crew struggle to build a future for humanity out of the shards and ruins of all that has come before.

As nearly unimaginable forces prepare to annihilate all human life, Holden and a group of unlikely allies discover a last, desperate chance to unite all of humanity, with the promise of a vast galactic civilization free from wars, factions, lies, and secrets if they win.

But the price of victory may be worse than the cost of defeat.

More than Worth the Wait

This is, quite simply, the best science fiction I’ve read & listened to in pretty much forever. The imaginative, evocative, and intelligent writing here is easily the equal of all the great Hugo-winning authors/series from decades past, as well as all the wonderful sci-fi pulp that always afforded a welcome respite from so many of those “important” works.

This performance lives up to that in every way as well. Mr. May’s voices, cadences, and delivery are the perfect compliment to the wonderful writing.

The whole is simply superlative. Read the series, listen to the series, and even watch the series on Amazon. It’s just that good.

A devastating, fitting, beautiful end

I didn’t want to read this book because I knew it would be the end of such an incredible story. But of course, I couldn’t stay away either. Jefferson Mays was brilliant as always. It seems incredible that the authors were able to wrap so much up in such a deep and elegant way. It ended the only way it could end, and we got to experience all the same joy and heartbreak that have been woven throughout the series with each of my favorite characters. I can’t see how anyone could possibly dislike anything about this book, or this series. Truly a masterpiece that I’ll come back to again and again.

I am not holding a pitchfork

It is done, and I am currently not carrying a pitchfork. Well played. It is extremely difficult to review this because of my relationship with Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War. They are conjoined as my favorite book when somebody asks. Everything passed that slipped. Now, I did enjoy them quite lot and there were moments that got back to LW/CB's level of constant awesome (the end of Bobby's arc was flawlessly executed). In general, I would say everything passed them is 3 out of 5, and they are 6 out of 5. I am 100% to harsh a judge. I say that all so you can understand why I gave it 4 out 5. There was actually a bit of anxiety before I started reading just because I knew it was going to fail. Most scenarios I foresaw involved me on Reddit type yelling about how I was let down, and I'm not. It feels well done and dusted, but I don't have a new favorite. LW/CB is still better, but that's a universal truth. Thank you guys for not Game of Thrones'ing The Expanse! I've enjoyed the ride!

PS The performance has been great the whole way through!
