Publisher's summary

From acclaimed author Steve Robinson comes a thrilling new Jefferson Tayte mystery.

When genealogist Jefferson Tayte is hired to prove the identity of a black sheep in his client’s family tree, he unwillingly finds himself drawn into a murder investigation with nothing more to go on than a 150-year-old letter and a connection to a legendary ruby that has been missing for generations.

As more letters are mysteriously left for him, Tayte becomes immersed in a centuries-old tale of greed, murder and forbidden love that takes his research from the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the colour and heat of colonial India.

A dark secret is buried in Jaipur, steeped in treachery and scandal. But why is it having such deadly repercussions in the present? Can Tayte find the ruby and prevent the past from repeating itself before it’s too late?

This is the seventh book in the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mystery series but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

Good plot...and a surprise twist at the end.

Great narration...I have gotten to know the protagonist through earlier books, and I like him. I always earn something about history and genealogy when I read a book in this series.

favorite so far

This JT mystery was less dark and cynical than previous books in the series and JT seems more human.

Another winner

Enjoying this series of ancestral stories. Years in this one would have made the transition from past and present easier to follow. Will read the next one, too.

Exceeded My Expectations

I wanted something a little mindless to relax my brain. This was decidedly more complex - even a bit convoluted - but it was interesting enough to hold my interest for a cross-country drive. By far the best "genealogical," mystery I've discovered thus far.

Good

Mr Robinson has written several books about its eascapades as a geneologist. This carries the same excitement as the previous ones It also has a slightly changed format to handle this historical aspects. I enjoyed that change as well.

Excellent in all respects

An excellent installment in a consistently excellent series. I greatly enjoy Jefferson Tayte's likeable, understated, good-hearted character, and the details of how he plies his genealogical detective trade add extra interest to an already interesting set of circumstances. The time-spanning mystery was masterfully handled. Both the past story and the present story kept you interested every step of the way and were connected in well-woven, believable ways. Both plots kept you guessing right up to the end. The story was well paced and the characters well rendered. The narration was also excellent, Simon Vance does a wonderful job as always. This is one of those lovely, rare books where you don't have to think "this was great except for…" it was just great all the way around. I hope there will be many more installments in future; I will definitely read them!
