About this listen

As the aide for a navy admiral more than thirty years ago, Mark C. Fava learned valuable lessons that were formative in his emergence as a thoughtful and successful leader. Now a vice president at the world’s largest aerospace company and a career aviation lawyer, Mark is sharing his wisdom in this insightful and entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the successes and failures of a young naval flight officer working every day for the Admiral and how the Admiral reacted as a great leader.

Mark’s stories will inspire you to unlock your leadership potential by applying lessons that will propel your leadership journey forward. An insightful guide for mid-career managers, early career lawyers, and junior military officers who aspire to be promoted, this book is also a fun listen for all military veterans who relished their time in uniform. The lessons Mark shares have timeless value. They are just as meaningful today as they were over thirty years ago and have been the keys to Mark’s promotions in both the military and the legal profession throughout his career.

Learning by observing both good and bad leaders is a solid strategy for professional development. The knowledge you gain becomes a treasure trove that guides you, the insight becomes part of your leadership fabric, and the observations shape you into the impactful leader you aspire to be. Putting the knowledge you gain from this book into practice will make you stand out among your peers as a high performer. You will gain an understanding of how executives think and what they appreciate. You will be organized, humble, and thoughtful—and you will be identified as an emerging leader.

Life lessons

Common sense is a key component to the life lessons shared here, but being very organized is right up there with it.

“Leadership Lessons That Stand the Test of Time

Lessons from the Admiral is a must-read for anyone seeking wisdom in leadership and life. Mark masterfully takes you on an unforgettable journey, weaving together personal, inspiring, emotional, and humorous stories that make you feel as if you were right there with him. His experiences as the Admiral’s aide are transformed into timeless leadership principles—insights that not only shaped his own successful career but also serve as a guiding map for anyone aspiring to lead with excellence.

Having worked alongside Mark for several years, I’ve witnessed firsthand how he lives out these principles. His leadership, humility, and authenticity continue to inspire me, and he embodies everything the Admiral recognized in him nearly 30 years ago.

I highly recommend this book!

Great stories with Leadership lessons as a bonus

Most books about leadership read like text book. This book is a great story. It could be fiction but it's not. It's rare to enjoy the story and get lessons in leadership too. Bravo Mark Fava!

Great Lessons and an Entertaining True Story

Mark Fava shares the lessons he learned as an admiral's aid in a series of entertaining stories. The lessons are simple but powerful and have broad application across work and life.

The book is read by the author, and listening feels very much like sitting down with a friend over coffee while the friend remembers the lessons he learned from the admiral.

I highly recommend it!

Great Book

As a mid career USNR Sailor who aspire to higher leadership, CAPT Fava’s book is a great tool to sharpen my skills while pursuing that journey. I have shared it with my fellow military/civilian friends who share the same goals. Thank you CAPT!

A must read for the transition from Military to Civilian life.

I listened to this on Audiobook, and it did not disappoint. It was recommended to me by an attorney I’ve come to admire while working through Law school. The lessons and experiences discussed by Fava in this book, are lessons that are emulated by all who have had the privilege to serve under a great leader in the service, no matter your branch of service. He then goes on while using a CREAC (conclusion, rule, explanation, application, conclusion) structure throughout the entire book in a way that makes it stick like glue to your lizard brain. ensuring the invaluable law school concept becomes second nature. I cannot think of any instances where the lessons from this book, are not applicable to all circumstances encountered while wandering through life, suffering from the affliction of the human condition.
As read by the author, the lessons feel personal, and resonate deeply, like a good old fashioned talk with dad.
