About this listen

The Sleepers must not awaken.…

The Lullabyer is dead, slain by invading crusaders, his soul stored in a magical crystal.

And there is no one left to sing the Lullaby.…

No one except a young monk named Pahu Opherio, son of the Lullabyer.

But he is on the far side of the war-torn island.

And only a band of disillusioned smugglers can possibly bring him the crystal in time,

so that he can learn the Lullaby and pacify the dreaded Sleepers.

Hunted every step of the way by beasts, ghosts and the enemy army,

the smugglers will need all the help they can get from gods, devils, witches and demons if they are to make it.

This is the Legend of the Lullabyer–an epic story of family and friendship in the face of overwhelming odds, of love that lasts beyond the grave.

An excellent Ross Hughes fantasy adventure!

When I was young, I was introduced to the fantasy genre through the writing of JRR Tolkien, about 30 years ago I “rediscovered” the fantasy genre through reading CS Lewis’s Narnia series to my Daughter. In the past couple of years, I stumbled on Ross Hughes a fantasy writer whose Maradoum stories/series rekindled my interest and enjoyment in fantasy stories. Ross Hughes is for me, one of those authors who has “captured me” with his stories of Maradoum and its associated lands and peoples.

I recently received an offer through Story origin to review the audiobook Legend of the Lullabyer, without hesitation I signed up.

While I’ve been used to Ross’s Chronicles of Maradoum series where several short stories make up each chronicle. Legend of the Lullabyer is a full-length book that tracks a group of misfit smugglers as they attempt to restore the Lullabyer to their land. Legend of the Lullabyer is one of his best stories, it is populated with a host of interesting characters faced with a quest of heroic proportions. Their quest is action packed and filled with several surprises – some uplifting and some quite depressing – but all are integral to the overall story. While I haven’t read all of Ross Hughes’ stories yet, I would say legend of the Lullabyer is my favorite, I base this on not just the excellent story but listening to the audiobook version expertly narrated by David Keyser. I received a review copy of the audiobook from StoryOrigin and chose to provide this review.

An Exhilarating Fantasy

This was my first experience with Ross Hughes' work, and it was very entertaining. The Lullabyer had to sing a sacred song in order to keep the marauding Sleepers asleep, or the Sleepers would kill everyone. When the Lullabyer was murdered, his soul entered into a magical crystal. A band of smugglers needed to take the soul-bearing crystal to find the Lullabyer's son. The story was fascinating and filled with action. The characters and creatures were varied and unusual. I'm looking forward to more stories from this author. David Keyser's narration was great, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Interesting storyline of saving a country

When I first started listening to this story it seemed like an adventure of Sindbad. There was plenty of action in this storyline, and you start routing for the pirates as they are helping the Lullabyer , they meet people along the way to help them to their goal. But in my opinion the heroes fall short. I did not like nor disliked the story, I just think it could have been better.

Story kept me wanting to hear more, narration ensured it.

New to Audible but an avid reader of fantasy tales. This was a great story with a mix of new foes and magics. Really enjoyed the narration bringing the characters to life. Definitely recommend.

Another well-written story from a good author

Legend of the Lullabyer: A High Fantasy Novel, my seventeenth read from author Ross C. Hughes. An enjoyable 432-page fantasy read. David Keyser's narration makes an enjoyable read even better and my re-read of this book worth the 12 hrs and 18 mins it took to re-read it. I look forward to reading more from this author. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Great read

A tad confusing in the beginning but I still could not put the book down. This is truly otherworldly. The narrator was great. He really brought the characters to life.
