About this listen

In a searingly candid memoir that he authored himself, Grammy Award-winning pop icon Rick Springfield pulls back the curtain on his image as a bright, shiny, happy performer to share the startling story of his rise and fall and rise in music, film, and television, and his lifelong battle with depression.

In the 1980s, singer-songwriter and actor Rick Springfield seemed to have it all: a megahit single in "Jessie’s Girl", sold-out concert tours, follow-up hits that sold more than 17 million albums. He became the pop soundtrack for an entire generation, including the 12 million daily viewers who avidly tuned in to General Hospital to swoon over his portrayal of the handsome Dr. Noah Drake. Yet lurking behind his success as a pop star and soap opera heartthrob and his unstoppable drive was a moody, somber, and dark soul, one filled with depression and insecurity.

In Late, Late at Night, the memoir his millions of fans have been waiting for, Rick takes readers inside the highs and lows of his extraordinary life. By turns winningly funny and heartbreakingly sad, every page resonates with Rick’s witty, wry, self-deprecating, brutally honest voice. On one level, he reveals the inside story of his ride to the top of the entertainment world. On a second, deeper level, he recounts with unsparing candor the forces that have driven his life, including his longtime battle with depression and thoughts of suicide, the shattering death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the absolute peak of fame.

Having finally found a more stable equilibrium, Rick’s story is ultimately a positive one, deeply informed by his passion for creative expression through his music, a deep love of his wife of 26 years and their two sons, and his life-long quest for spiritual peace.

Great Book...Honesty and Redemption

Wow...what a great book. It's easy to say what someone should've, or shouldn't have done. So I'm not going there...because I haven't had a perfect life either. But, I have to give respect to Rick, for sharing these private episodes of his life. Was some of it shocking? Yes, but that's what makes a great book!! I've always been a fan of Rick's music, cause I'm a musician myself... but I knew nothing about, Rick Springfield, the man. Now...I'm even more of a fan. Why? Because this book was honest. And at the end of the day...we all want peace and harmony. Some of us take a longer route...but like, Rick...eventually we make it.

Sex, Dogs and Rock-n-Roll

In high school I had a band that covered Jesse’s Girl. I grabbed that album and was surprised at how well the songs fit together on that record. I then moved in to more progressive music but always remembered the lessons I learned for Working Class Dog. Always tried ground myself in that style of rock that fools you into thinking it is not dangerous, but always with heavier implication of demons gone amuck.
Great to hear it straight from Rick also. No one could put those feelings into your story. Bravo!
Uncomfortably honest with a dose good self-deprecating sarcasm.
Good stuff my man…
Thank you.

Reawakened by the honest exposure of his life

Very impressed and will listen to this many times. Rick is adept at expressing his own personal underground. The good, the bad and the ugly, so they say. His narration brought me into his story to feel his pain and joy as he exposed his challenges chapter by chapter. He is truly a multi talented writer and I look forward to reading his next book.

Love that Rick read it!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Rick’s story even more because it was read by Rick himself.

Insightful and relatable autobiography

I thoroughly enjoyed and sympathized with this. If you think dogs are better people than most humans, you’ll like it, too. Also, anyone who has struggled with depression and addiction will discover that no one is immune, and fame and fortune aren’t fixes for what needs to be healed on the inside.

A book

good read, easy to follow and Ricks voice is better then most narrators. I was not expecting a lot of the book and was a little shocked at some of the stories.

It should have been obvious

It should have been obvious Rick is a good storyteller. I grew up loving his music, and hearing his story made me feel like a teenager and fell in love with the man behind the music again! Looking forward to reading his other novels as well now.
