Publisher's summary

In the backcountry of Idaho, a tribe of men are hunting and killing with a dream of returning the world to an earlier time. A time when courage and prowess in the field determined a man's worth. A time when the strong took what they wanted, and the weak cowered in fear.

Mike Bryant has come to the wilderness to die. Tired of the trappings of modern life, his will to live has run out. But when he crosses paths with a group of warriors who challenge him, he suddenly finds purpose. Mike is no ordinary man. Frozen and given up for dead, an inner core of rage ignites a fury few have seen and lived.

Deep in the White Cloud mountains, a demon is awakening. The last son of the War God was forged in the storm of blood and fire. And now he's angry.

If you love to”discover” a truly great author this book is for you.

Clay Martin is one of the rough men who allow us to sleep safely in or beds at night. He is the real deal and man can he write. I’ll be watching closely for his next book. He is now on my favorite authors list.

Really enjoyable

Sort of Reacher style story and I mean that as a compliment. This had some really interesting details mixed with a good story. It was well read and one of those hard to turn off the car in the driveway plots.

Fun Stuff

Violent predictable but still oh so satisfying. Check out the author on YouTube. The cock holster was a new one for me.

Excellent from Chapter 1

The action starts very quickly. The main character is written from a very clearly experienced point of view. the details are accurate and the whole thing is an amazing ride.

Best Damn Book I’ve Listened to in 5 Years. Period.

Brother Clay knows how to write and write exceptionally well. This is one thing for those rare books that I was satisfied with the ending while regretting I had reached said end. Although I do believe there is room for the War God’s last son to get up to some more shenanigans, but maybe it’s better that it ends here. Really a remarkable book from start to end and the Luke other books, if there were a few minutes I wasn’t focused on listening due to outside events (read my wife asking me to paint the garage etc etc etc etc, I backed the book up and listened again. Most of the time I still get the gist of what I missed and keep the hammer down, but not this book. I wanted to hear EVERY WORD. It is that good. The narrator did an outstanding job across the board. I’m not familiar with Chris Abell, but bet your ass I’m going to look up his other narrations. I’ve already got Martin’s next book in the chute.

Two things I knew listening to the preview:
1. I was going to really enjoy this book.
2. I was going to wish Clay Martin wrote longer books.

Finishing this first book, those 2 things still remain. Sometimes I’m cheap SOB and I don’t buy short books, but this book is worth ever cent or every 1 and 0 of your Audible credit. I think anyone who enjoys this genre will enjoy it, and definitely if you are a kindred brother to Mr. Martin - meaning an Army veteran, not necessarily a Jarhead or SOF soldier. It was just damn near a perfect book, if such a thing besides the Good Book exists. Outstanding job brother. Outstanding job.

Wait for it...

The pacing in this shorter story isn’t bad. The opening scene had me furrowing my brow and tilting my head. I almost declined going any further after the first chapter but I was in the truck and didn’t want to pull over to find something new.

The character development is slow. Particularly for the antagonist. But it’s good. Real good. Give this thing several chapters before making up your mind.
