Quand Pierre Lurier sortit de prison, il se trouva sans travail et sans pain. Il avait été condamné, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, pour vol avec effraction dans une maison où il venait d'entrer comme valet de chambre. En prison, il avait appris à faire des ferrets pour cordons de soulier. Or, dans la petite ville de province où la surveillance de la haute police l'obligeait à demeurer, il lui était absolument impossible d'utiliser ce métier tout spécial. D'autre part, il ne fallait pas songer à se replacer comme domestique. Pierre Lurier avait donc pour horizon la misère et la faim.
Il réfléchit qu'en travaillant longtemps et beaucoup, si par hasard il trouvait de la besogne, il arriverait uniquement à ne pas crever comme un chien. Il se dit, par contre, qu'en commettant un nouveau crime, il pourrait d'un coup gagner non seulement un morceau de pain, mais peut-être la richesse.
