Story
The works of Thomas Wolfe cemented his legacy as one of the very best of the American Southern writers. Wolfe's largely autobiographical novel features Eugene Gant, who pines for a more expansive life after being born to a father whose bouts of maniacal raving are fueled by a prodigious appetite for drink.

Story
Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. His first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart.

enjoyable dog stories
great short stories all about a dog named lad. listened together as a family with tween and teens, all who also enjoyed this book very much. all stories appropriate for these ages. I would not recommend for younger listeners- the language would be a bit old for them and several of the story 'themes' are not appropriate for little ones, but fine for tween and up! only complaint is that collies are so worshipped as the best dog ever, etc- that gets a little annoying from time to time (Great Pyrenees are truly best! mutts are a close second!)

I read this book when I was in elementary school, and when I found it on Audible, I just had to get it. I am so glad I did. It is a wonderful book and I have really enjoyed listening to it. It brought back wonderful memories.

A Study in Contempt
I couldn't finish it, so I suppose it's possible the author developed a bit of humility and regard for fellow humanity by the end, but the brazen snobbery of the author just made it unreadable/unlistenable for me. It's one thing to think - even know - that your dog is the greatest, but there were very few human beings in the book - or animals for that matter - who had the author's respect. Horrid.
