E come in ogni avventura che si rispetti, si dota delle armi magiche necessarie all'impresa: una mappa quadrata di ottantuno caselle, una raccolta di lettere d'amore e alcune vecchie agende fitte di appunti. La città è Torino, la storia è quella di una coppia italiana del dopoguerra, del loro innamorarsi, sposarsi e vivere prima felici e contenti, e poi infelici e scontenti. S'incontrano nel 1943: lui, ufficiale del Genio e futuro ingegnere, è appena tornato dalla Russia; lei ama la musica e la poesia. Si sposano nel 1946, mettono su famiglia.
Gli anni della ricostruzione diventano presto gli anni del miracolo economico, che diventano presto gli anni della contestazione e della crisi. L'ingegnere, soccombendo alla melanconia, scava un tunnel personale dove rimane intrappolato, intrappolando anche la moglie e i figli. Disseminati i frammenti del tempo nello spazio della città, il narratore indaga i motivi misteriosi della depressione del padre. Alla fine, però, nessuna ragione gli sembra sufficiente a spiegare trent'anni di tristezza irrimediabile. Capisce che sono proprio i ricordi più dolorosi quelli che gli permettono di non interrompere il dialogo con i genitori - che, dopotutto, non vuole far scomparire dalla propria vita.
In questa Traversata, il lettore sceglierà se indugiare nei luoghi del romanzo familiare o avventurarsi su sentieri più imprevedibili e nascosti.
