En La mística del instante, el padre José Tolentino Mendonça defiende los sentidos del cuerpo como "grandes entradas y salidas" de humanidad y fe.

Esta perspectiva, apoyada por la "narrativa bíblica", contradice una interpretación muy extendida según la cual el misticismo es una "práctica elitista que consiste en desconectarse del mundo para volver a entrar en el espacio interior".
