About this listen
Dive deep into the enchanting world of Korean mythology with this comprehensive collection that brings together three classic works on Korea's rich tapestry of tales, legends, and folklore. This anthology draws from the following renowned titles:
Korean Fairy Tales by William Elliot Griffis: A captivating journey through stories that have shaped the Korean imagination for centuries. Griffis beautifully captures the essence of these tales, taking listeners on an unforgettable journey through a land filled with magic, mystery, and ancient wisdom.
Korean Folk Tales: Imps, Ghosts, and Fairies Translated From the Korean of Im Bang and Yi Ryuk by James S. Gale: This collection provides a unique blend of haunting ghost stories and tales of mischievous imps. Gale's translations perfectly capture the spirit and wit of these enduring tales, making them as compelling today as they were when first told.
Korean Tales by Horace Newton Allen: Beyond just stories, Allen provides readers with a nuanced understanding of the cultural and historical context of these tales. His descriptive chapters about Korea serve as a valuable introduction to the country's vibrant folklore.
Here is a look some of the stories inside this collection:
- The Unmannerly Tiger
- Tokgabi and His Pranks
- East Light and the Bridge of Fishes
- Prince Sandalwood, the Father of Korea

Story
Although enormously attractive as sheer entertainment, Dervish tales were never presented merely on the level of a fable, legend, or folklore. They stand comparison in wit, construction, and piquancy with the finest stories of any culture, yet their true function as Sufi teaching stories is so little-known in the modern world, that no technical or popular terms exist to describe them. The material in Tales of the Dervishes is the result of a thousand years of development, during which Dervish masters used these and other teaching stories to instruct their disciples. The tales are held to convey powers of increasing perception unknown to the ordinary man.

Story
Have you ever encountered a noblewoman who was so beautiful that every time she walked by a body of water, the divine being who lived there kidnapped her? Or a mole who wanted to marry his beloved daughter to the wind? You will get to meet both of them in this audiobook. Changes in religious belief across the centuries came to have an important impact on Korean mythology. The earliest religion was a form of shamanism, and the belief in gods and spirits who inhabit animals and mountains come to the fore in several of these tales.

Story
Korea has a long, riveting history—it is also a divided nation. South Korea is a vibrant democracy, the tenth largest economy, and is home to a world-renowned culture. North Korea is ruled by the most authoritarian regime in the world, a poor country in a rich region, and is best known for the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family. But both Koreas share a unique common history. Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo draw on decades of research to explore the history of modern Korea, from the late nineteenth century, Japanese occupation, and Cold War division to the present day.

The Korean Peninsula today is divided into two, but there was a time when this peninsula was divided into many states. Over the course of time, and besieged by expansive transient dynasties outside of this modest piece of land, many clans and tribes overran their lands. Story
Celtic mythology is widely considered to be among the most captivating of Europe's various mythologies due to the presence of a number of captivating aspects, including but not limited to: adventure, heroism, romance, and magic. The Celts were once a great people who dominated most of Europe, but, as a result of Roman invasions, they have since been reduced to a few minor groupings. Their mythology, on the other hand, was preserved largely as a result of the efforts of later monks from Ireland and Wales who wrote down the stories.

Story
Korea was one of the last countries in Asia to be visited by Westerners, and its borders have remained largely unchanged since it was unified in the seventh century. Though it is one of the world's oldest and most ethnically homogeneous states, Korea was not born in a vacuum. Geographically isolated, the country was heavily influenced by powerful China and was often used as a bridge to the mainland by Japan. Calling themselves as "a shrimp among whales", Koreans borrowed elements of government, culture, and religion, all the while fiercely fighting to maintain independence.

Story
Long overshadowed by Japan and China, South Korea is a small country that happens to be one of the great national success stories of the postwar period. From a failed state with no democratic tradition, ruined and partitioned by war, and sapped by a half-century of colonial rule, South Korea transformed itself in just 50 years into an economic powerhouse and a democracy that serves as a model for other countries. With no natural resources and a tradition of authoritarian rule, Korea managed to accomplish a second Asian miracle.

Cool stuff
I am a pretty big fan of manwha and other Korean light novels. I really enjoyed learning more about the mythology and seeing how it has influenced some of the contemporary entertainment. The narrator did a great job telling these stories.

Entertaining and informative
I enjoyed listening to the tales included in this collection and Mr. Markert is a wonderful narrator. His voice puts my a state of zen. Speaking of zen, I found it interesting when the collection defined and talked about the three main religions: Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. It was also very interesting to hear the history and movement of Asian peoples from one territory to another. While there was a lot of interaction between the different peoples, they seemed to have maintained distinct characteristics that defined them as Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Like so much of mythology, other realms have a mighty role in the stories and it is fun hearing this version of what that looks like.

Korean Mythology
As always, I enjoyed listening to this collection and learning a bit about a different culture. I am not as familiar with Asian folklore in general as compared with European, so this was very interesting for me. I enjoyed the narration as well as the variety of the stories included.

Another great compilation
I have listened to a great many of books from Audiobook Giveaways and I have enjoyed each one so far. They do classic audiobooks as well as cultural content, that I do not know if I would find elsewhere, This one was no exception.
I think the narrator did a great job. His diction was clear and pace appropriate.
I enjoyed the stories that give a glimpse into another culture. I enjoy listening to the different takes on what may often be a similar story, told in retold throughout generations and different cultures, yet in a different way.
