About this listen
Baseball may be America’s official favorite pastime, but for Martha Rose and her friends, quilting is far more fun… and a lot less dangerous.
A diamond brocade pattern is more quilter Martha Rose’s style than a baseball diamond - especially when it comes to the new eyesore of a stadium ruining her lovely San Fernando Valley neighborhood. Martha doesn’t know a bunt from a bundt cake, but when she stumbles upon the battered body of baseball coach Dax Martin, she doesn’t need a scorecard to know it’s foul play. LAPD homicide detective Arlo Beavers is convinced one of her neighbors is responsible. But Martha and her fellow quilters Lucy and Birdie soon discover a whole field of suspects who might have wanted to take the coach out of the game permanently.

Story
Early in the Great War, men left Britain’s factories in droves to enlist. Struggling to keep up production, arsenals hired women to build the weapons the military urgently needed. “Be the Girl Behind the Man Behind the Gun,” the recruitment posters beckoned. Thousands of women—cooks, maids, shopgirls, and housewives—answered their nation’s call. These “munitionettes” worked grueling shifts often seven days a week, handling TNT and other explosives with little protective gear.

Nate knelt beside the dead girl. This wasn't his first homicide, it wasn't even the first dead prostitute he'd investigated. It wasn't the first strangling death he'd been assigned to. But this one bothered him. Maybe it was her youth; she appeared to be in her early twenties. Maybe it was her looks, as death had yet to rob her of her beauty. Maybe she reminded him of his own daughter, Lizzie, who was only a few years younger. Maybe it was something else entirely.

Story
Charlotte Arkendale was quite sure she knew all there was to know about men. After all, she'd made a highly lucrative career out of steering marriage-minded women away from untrustworthy members of the opposite sex. But nothing in Charlotte's considerable experience had prepared her for the arresting stranger who appeared on her doorstep to apply for the position of her new man-of-affairs.He claimed to be a respectable gentleman - discreet, unassuming, ordinary to the point of being dull. Yet something about the set of Mr. St. Ives's broad shoulders and the unrelenting determination that smoldered in the depths of his amber eyes warned Charlotte to be wary. For the strong-minded beauty was already embroiled in a wealth of danger. Two months earlier, Miss Drusilla Heskett had become on of Charlotte's clients. Now the woman was dead, murdered in her own home, and Charlotte feared that the killer may have been one of the suitors she herself had advised Miss Heskett to reject. Still, with the right man by her side, Charlotte was certain she could uncover the truth and bring Drusilla's killer to justice. But was the enigmatic St. Ives Mr. Right...or Mr. Wrong?

Story
Siddhartha, a story based on the early life of Gautama Buddha, is concerned with the human search for self-knowledge and authentic spirituality. Hesse had written the first part of the book easily enough, but had to stop for a year with depression, before completing it in 1922. The book is a synthesis of Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, and Christian thought, though Hesse rejected all conventional religion for a more individual and personal path.

Spenser earned his degree in the school of hard knocks, so he is ready when a Boston university hires him to recover a rare, stolen manuscript. He is hardly surprised that his only clue is a radical student with four bullets in his chest. The cops are ready to throw the book at the pretty blond coed whose prints are all over the murder weapon but Spenser knows there are no easy answers. He tackles some very heavy homework and knows that if he doesn't finish his assignment soon, he could end up dead.

Narrators need to be literate
Would you try another book from Mary Marks and/or Dara Rosenberg?
Yes to Mary Marks. I would totally avoid any book by this narrator.
What did you like best about this story?
I like the character development and concise but clear scene descriptions.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yuck! First of all, this squeaky little teenie bopper comes on trying to be the voice of a 55-year old. OK, that happens frequently no matter how much it detracts from a book. But this narrator doesn't know some basic words. Corpse of Engineers??? It wouldn't have been so bad except that the CORPS of Engineers comes up in this story a lot. I was driving while listening and wanted to smash my speakers! Totally ruined this book for me.
Was Knot in My Backyard worth the listening time?
No. The story is all right, but the time listening to it was wasted.
Any additional comments?

Great cozy mystery!
This one was even better than the first. I just don't know why audible doesn't have the rest of the books in the series. They've been doing this a lot lately (only carrying a few books of a larger series) and it's really irritating!

Great story, weak narrator
The story is a wonderful cozy mystery. The book is a great escape into a world that sounds interesting and peopled with lively characters. I'm a quilter and love the quilt details. The only draw back to this audible book is the narrator. The narrator needs to practice her pronunciation of words. For example, the Army Corps of Engineers has a silent s, it's not a dead body, not a corpse. It was pronounced as if it were a dead body throughout the book. There are many other mispronounced words throughout the book, and I found them distracting at best and annoying by the end. I'm going to listen to the rest of the books in the series, but not right away. My ears need a break from odd sounding words.
